Dirtying up a engine

I will be building my first Kit as soon as I get all the Tools i think I will need,I am building a sopwith 1-1/2 Strutter in 1/78th Scale, I already have a Color for the Engine,it will be Steel,Starting right out of the chute I want to put some details on it what i want to do is ''Dirty up the engine" a little bit how would I go about doing that, and what would I need?

If I paint the engine steel, I will use a black sludge wash ( watercolor, water, a drop of Dawn) for the reccessed areas . Once the wash is dried and wiped away, I’ll take silver paint and highlight the raised details. This will give the engine a more detailed, dirty appearance. Hope this helps…
