I have permission from “she who must be obeyed” to get a digital camera, supposedly for family use but I’ll get something tht will also take good photos of models. I was thinking of a minimum of 5 megapixils, 3 x optical zoom but also not too expensive. I’ve checked out a mates Sony DSCP10 and it seems to fit the bill. What digital cameras do others use? What are the things to look out for?
I would highly recommend Nikon’s Coolpix series. I have two, and a friend has another model - he’s a modeler too! -. All work perfectly, have lots (too many!?) functions including macro. Optical zoom is a must of course. This was not my first digital camera. I had a Ricoh before that and got quite disappointed and frustrated. Don’t let yourself be tempted by high numbers in the Digital zoom avenue! None of the 3 camera I’m talking about here have more less than 2 and than a 3megapixels and that’s just perfect for work on the PC and still give extremely great results on the printer, even with photographic paper. I use mine (2.1 MP) to do portraits of models I have face-painted and sell the pics, on calendars and stuff like that, to the parents and grand-parents.
Also, get something that has NiMH rechargeable batteries, and get yourself a second set, to be on the safe side. And also chose something that has an optical viewfinder AS well AS a screen. There are times when the screen can be a pain, and there are times when the battery is low too!
You can do a search on my screen name and you’ll find numerous pics I’ve taken with this camera (admitedly, I reduce the size of the pictures before uploading them on Ron’s gallery, though!)
More pixels just give you bigger files on your PC that take longer to send and longer to download at the other end…
Good luck!
I have the Kodak EasyShare CX4200 with Docking station. Provides good pics.
The “Queen of My Castel” has Also decreed that our joint Christmas present will be a digital camra so I thank you to for your input.
Just posted in another thread on this. I highly recommend going to www.dpreview.com and seeing what they have to say about digital cams. I spend some time there before I bought mine and it was definitely time well spent. They have great side-by-side comparisons of various models and basically tell it like it is.
Personally, I chose the Canon A70, but the Nikon 3100 was very appealing as well. Either of those two brands have pretty good cameras, along with Sony and Olympus.
Do a few searches on their forum too. There’s been lots of discussion there about various cameras and their strengths/weaknesses…

Hi. This is kinda late, but I just joined. I have been a Canon EOS user since Canon released EOS camera #1. I am saving for the latest from them----The EOS digital Rebel. 6.5 megapixels and with over 50 Canon EF lenses to choose from, you may never get bored with photography again. Go ahead and check it out at http://www.canoneos.com/digitalrebel/index.html [:D]
