Detailing ecm dispensers on monogram intruder or prowler.

I’ve been detailing a EA-6B in 1/48 scale. I’m having a lot of trouble with the flare dispenser on the bottom rear of plane. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to acheive realistic looking flare dispensers. Thank you.

True Details has an ICAP II update set of photoetch that provides you with a new part to overlay onto the kit part. It gives you the openings, but not the depth of an empty rack. Even parts cast in resin look like they are filled with chaff/flares. I have not seen a truly convincing way to make the empty tubes without creating a whole stack of very small square tubing aligned to fit the racks on the plane.

Are the individual chaff/flare tubes recessed, or raised bits? You may want to try a thin black wash that falls into the details, followed by a drybrushing with a light color to bring out the contrast.
