I am trying to build a dio with a US M-88 recovering a destroyed IDF 113 but I am not sure on how to show the 113 knocked out …The IDF has that add on Armor with the holes in it. I was thinking about burning the road wheels and the showing where a round or RPG went into the engine comartment but I am not sure on what it would look like or how to go about doing this. Does anyone have some simple suggestions or even reference websites that could help. I would appreciate aany and all the help I could get! [bow]

This would be a big project.
The add on armour is designed to stop or minimise RPG rounds. Same principle as the wire mesh Schurtzen the Germans used against Bazooka rounds in WW2.
The M113 is Aluminium, and an RPG would make one really big mess. There wouldn’t be a lot left, so you would be showing a whole lot of charred and buckled hull with little else.
A simpler project would be a vehicle that has lost road wheels from a mine blast or deflected RPG round, or some such. Still lots of opportunity to show engine hatch open, etc.
Here is a pic of an Aussie M113 hit by recoiless rounds in Nam which might help

Peter, the link did’nt work right but here’s the pic.
Thanks LQ
Well I know it will be hard to do but I think I could work it right. I want to create the effect of total chaos. I was thinking of making it look where an RPG hit the road Wheels then maybe some Artillery or it was knocked out by a tank or something. I am still in the design phase or the project. I have the models built. The M113 is built but could be modified (or rather destroyed) . so any other pics would help thanks you all!
Good luck on your project Rangerboy. Post some pictures of the build if possible.

Wow… What a mess…
Umm… Why exactly were the Aussies in Vietnam? Basically supporting the US or was there an own agenda?
must agree on the aluminium…it really vanishes from existence.
lots of scratchbuilding for you for the debris.
Supporting the US i believe, we had our Centurions deployed over there to at once stage
Vietnam wasn’t just a US action, but a NATO one. We had Korean, Ausie, British, troops to name a few of the countries.
Don’t forget the ROK, the Vietnamese feared those guys.
Gee, I wish I wasn’t in that one!
A number of nations sent troops to Vietnam. Some were involve in the fighting & others were tasked to help the civilian population. The Philippines was one of those nations. Filipinos have fought side by side with the Americans not just during WW2 but also during the Korean War.
OK so back to the topic … What type of round besides a uranium depleted round would destroy the add on armor on an IDF 113? I have seen the results of a HE artillery round but like I said it is very rarean Israeli APC would be hit by a US tank. Any comments… suggestions… anything???
Basically anything larger than an RPG, such as a tank HEAT or SABOT round will slice right through an M113 even with the IDF side armor. The mesh side armor is designed to allow the RPG to detonate before it hits the hull of the vehicle. This dispurses the effects of the shaped charge and defeats the round. Anything other than an RPG, and the mesh is little more effective than window screen. Direct hit by a tank or anti-tank missle will slice it open. Even a 25mm cannon like on the Bradley or 35mm cannon on a BMP2 will go through the IDF armor and the hull.
I wonder if .50 cal AP would pennetrate it. I’ve seen it go through both sides of an M114.
Ron.
ok so what would the damage look like if it was hit by say a T-72 or something heavy like that?
Ah…maybe like there would be nothing left of it?
While on my way out of Iraq in1991 I drove past a M113 on a flatbed truck with the whole right side of the crew compartment gone[:0] and only a only a small hole (6-8in) in the left side. It almost looked like someone made it a cut-a-way to show interior detail.
