Designing my own BB

Hello all,I’ve been working on my second ship and decided to design a BB for myself, although it is based on the bismarck (for size only),I’ve named it the USS OHIO for 2 reasons ,first that is were I live and in 1939 there was a plan to build a BB called the OHIO but the plans were eventually dropped so she was never built. The link below ( if I can get the link right) is what I’ve done to this point I’d appreciate your help and/or advice, take care and have a good one.[:D]

battleship ohio

Looks like fun. She’ll never make the Panama Canal.

Yes, I know that is going to be her biggest downfall[banghead],but in my research the bismarck was already to wide to fit in the canal so I figured to just make it as big as I could[swg]

Prowannab I discovered that too when I was seeing what the effect of your widening exercise would be. Slightly shorter than Iowa, longer than South Dakota, but very broad beam.

I had never given much thought to her relative proportions to other ships of the time- she was much larger than I would have guessed. But I’m a wingnut like you.

This is what makes the forums fun; inspires thinking and research.

I hope you are open to suggestions from people and ask as you go.

You do know Ohio was assigned to a Montana Class, for which models I have no knowledge, but that’s a different time frame.

The ships forum people are just the nicest, and to those of you who bother to read my post, my next ship model, CA-38 is for you!

Bill

Bondoman,I’m always open for advice and/or comments as I feel that is what makes everyone a better modeler. Because no matter how wise you are about a certain subject there is always someone that knows more than you, so I always absorb the info and do greatly appreciate it.But for your next project I don’t have a clue of what it is ,but good luck with it, as you said in another post google is your friend. I don’t know of any more truer words ever spoken.

Just wanted to say… I love the idea of a Superbattleship named the USS Ohio. Make sure it has the firepower to knock off the Yamato and Musashi.

Semper Fi,

Chris

I like it! I can appreciate the amount of work you have put into this as I have built a U.S.S Montana which came from a base Tamiya Missouri kit. I had to lengthen/widen the hull just like you did. In the future I plan to build a fictionalized U.S.S New York with 3 funnels and 5 16" triple turrets. This is based on one of the many so called maximum battleship plans created during the 1930’s. Please continue to post more pictures of your progress.

Caramonraitlin; I had a major problem with all the puttying and sanding the hull took[banghead].How about you ? I just can’t stand all the sanding involved.

Ridleusmc; How does 16 x 16" main guns, 12 x 11.5" guns second battery, 20 ? x 5" third battery,16 x torpedoe launches ,and not to mention all the AA guns sound ?[:D]

Me either. That’s the one thing I like the least whether it’s joining the wings on air planes or stretching the hull of a ship model. I had to add approximatel 2 " of balsa wood to the length of my Montana. I left it slightly wider than the hull and then sanded it back to match. I then covered the balsa with SQUADRONS white putty and sanded and sanded and sanded some more. Then more putty and sand and sand and sand. Finally got it smooth enough and sprayed the whole hull with a gray automotive primer. In regards to my New York, I plan to add a total of 20 of the the 5 inch guns (10 turrets per side) and haven’t decided on the rest of the smaller AA guns. They’ll at least be the same as the Missouri’s and I’ll try to squeeze in a few more. Perhaps since it’ll have five main turrets (2 in front, 3 in the back), I’ll add quads to the number 2, 3 and 4 turret top.

Caramon; I would love to see a pic of your montana, sounds like a very nice build.I would also like to say that the NEW YORK sounds like another interesting build, and do hope you keep us posted with your work on it. I to used balsa wood ,but I used it for the deck, the thing i forgot about was the thickness of the wood compared to the thickness of the deck, so that was a lot of extra work I didn’t plan on, but that’s what you run into when you push forward and not completely think things through

It sounds a little like putting all of your eggs in one basket to me. Sink that ship and you’ve lost an awful lot of ordnance (and crew).

That it would Subfixer, but It would only be one ship of a whole battle group ( carriers, battlecruisers, cruisers, destroyers and of course to me no battle group is complete without the sub ),and a fellow ran some kind’of ship program for me on another site and it figured up that at the waterline anyway it would take something like 25 torpedoes to sink her. Of course like the yamoto it could be sank by a/c so I’m going to put as many AA guns on her as I can, I’m adding a lot of upper decks so I can add about twice the AA as the Bismarck had. But at the end of the day no ship is unsinkable so theres always that one plane or one ship that can land that perfect shot and put’er down. We also have to think this is a what if build and I’m sure no navy in the world would’ve actually built this thing , the main reason to me is that she won’t fit through the panama, and for a US ship that’s just incomprehensible. It’s mainly just a fun build that I can throw my warped mind at[%-)]

Prowannab:

I’ll take a picture of my Montanna and post it in a day or so. When I get further along on the New York I’ll post a picture of that also. Right now, I’ve only finished the hull and the deck. I also took a hard route on the deck and cut it out in one piece out of styrene. Then with a ruler and several sharp X-acto blades I scribed the deck planking. Looks nice but sure took some time to do.

Yeah, that should do it, and it sounds fitting of the name “Ohio.”

Go Browns, Go Buckeyes, Go Bengals,

Chris

Looks great so far![tup]

I wonder…

It would be an interesting discussion thread to ponder how it would have faired in a one-on-one duel against the YAMATO?

Incidentally,I’m originally from Ohio.So it’s good to see your armored behemoth bearing the proud name…U.S.S. OHIO! [#toast]

P.S. Never mind the “what if” scenario. The Ohio’s radar guided main guns would probably have used the YAMATO for target practice.
