This is the 1/48 AMT P-40F with AMtech’s resin nose. Markings are for ‘Miss Fury,’ flown by Capt. Roy E. ‘Deke’ Whittaker of the 65th FS/57th FG whilst at Tunisia in the late spring of 1943. Whittaker was the leading ace of the 57th FG with seven victories. The model was based on a profile in Carl Molesworth’s excellent book, “P-40 Warhawk Aces of the MTO.” Thanks for looking, and as always comments or constructive criticism is appreciated!
Looks real good from here! Beautiful job on the paint, decals, and construction, plus the weathering from top to bottom is well done and not too overpowering. [tup]
Top notch, Mark! I can’t recall any that you’ve done nicer than this one. The resin nose looks great, as does the weathering. Excellent looking build you have there!
Brian, Mark, Frank, Rick, Mike, Mike, John, Darren, Thad, Marc, and Charles: Thanks everyone for the kind words and encouragement! Initially I wasn’t too happy with the panel line wash on the upper surfaces (too stark for my liking), but toned it down some later in the weathering process and, although not perfect, am much more satisfied with it.
Jeremias, Arki30, and Ray: Thanks for taking the time to look and the kind comments!
Ray: I simply airbrushed Model Master Metalizer Burnt Iron on the exhausts. The effect isn’t quite as nice as other people get with more elaborate methods, but is good enough for me. The exhausts are a real pain to work with due to the resin nose, since each has to be cut out and glued in place separately.
I was totally taken back when I found your post on the web. The P-40 “Miss Fury” #43 you modelled from the profile in Carl Molesworth’s book was my father’s Warhawk… He would be real proud.
You did an excellent job on the color scheme and you certainly got my attention when I was surfing the web tonight.
Dad was a great pilot, a true warrior who loved his country and was an outstanding husband and father of four.
I attend the annual 57th FG reunions with my mother each year. The stories the survivors tell about each other makes you wish you could have been with them in the desert. They were a tough group and led the way for all the pilots of today. They were all brothers in one way or another.
I can’t wait to show my sisters, brother and my mother your work. Thanks again for the great job on “Miss Fury”…
Thank you for the kind words! I’m pleasantly stunned that you replied to my post and am happy that you appreciate my attempt to honor your father in the way that I do–by modeling. I have the greatest respect for men like him who served in WWII. They, and the women who supported them, truly are the ‘Greatest Generation.’ I’m especially interested in those who flew and serviced the P-40 in the MTO. Unfortunately, information on this aircraft and theatre is harder to come by than almost any other. I wanted to model your father’s Warhawk as accurately as possible and Carl Molesworth, both via email correspondence and his book, was invaluable in my research. Except for the article you have the link to, my search on the Internet turned up nil, at least as far as photographs were concerned.
It would have been a great honor if I could have met your father and listened to his stories of flying the Warhawk in ‘The Blue!’ Make sure you pass on my best to your mother, and a heartfelt “Thanks” for me to the 57th FG veterans at their next reunion.
