Is there such a thing ? I am building the old Italeri kit for the ETO, and having looked at reference photos on a Google search, am now more confused than ever. There seems to be about a dozen shades , ranging from olive drab to a darkish green. Help !!! I normally use Tamiya paints but have no idea what to get.
There’s not really a definitive shade, when I paint Shermans, I use Olive Drab, but even then, theres a whole lot of shades to OD
So pretty much you can go OD and be safe
Was there a definitive color…yes, and the only time they looked that way was when the left the factory!
I also use Tamiya. I would use XF-62 OD Green and the use some MIG Allied Faded Green give faded highlights. With subsequent weathering and other pin washes…you cannot go wrong!
Rounds Complete!!
Well my friend, this question has been asked quite a bit on these boards over the years. Along with the "which OD paint matches US issue: etc. IMHO, the best advice is Don’t worry about it. Depending on the theater of operations, environment, etc. there is no “correct” OD shade. The trick is to paint the vehicle as natural light would fall on it. Lighter on some surfaces, and shadowed where appropriate.
Here is how I paint my allied period armor:
first, an overall base coat of Tamiya flat black:

Next an OD base coat, lightened with a touch of flat white, and a little but of flat base added to the mixture, carefully applied to accentuate the dark shadowed areas by applying a thin layer of OD:

Then some weathering with some pigments and a lightened mixture of OD, strategically applied:

On to final assembly and detailing, (more pigments, oil stains etc.):

And, finally, a finished presentation, with depth, shadowing and weathering to make the OD interesting and realistic to look at:

Same technique on this M10:

Steve
Notice how much different the greens look in Steve’s post, depending on the type of light used…some pics of the same tank look more green than in other pics…
