decanting?????

i’ve heard about decanting spray paint, can anyone tell me how??? i would love to run some duplicolor automotive lacquer through my airbrush!! any help on this would be greatly appreciated!!! i found the exact match for a aoshima airwolf that i ordered from japan, phantom gray metallic. duplicolor spray cans don’t spray so good and i don’t want to scew this one up like the over priced amt ertl airwolf i got off ebay!!!

Being somewhat new to modeling aspects I figured this one out by spraying into one of my Micro Mark screened funnels , hold the funnel over the bottle and spray until it backs up ,let off ,then again , until you have enough in the bottle. this worked ,I am sure there are other methods.I do this in my booth with the fan on .

Well I decant spray paint by spraying it into a large glass beaker. I spray a steady stream so it hits the side of the container and then collects in the bottom. Take the paint and strain it through a paint filter and place it in an empty hobby paint bottle that you have saved and cleaned out.

cool, sound fairly easy can’t wait to try!!! thanks

Don’t forget that you’ll also be releasing a lot of nasty fumes so do it in a well ventilated area. I like to step outside.

i have a homemade painting booth hooked up to a blower motor i pulled out of a 100,000 btu furnace!!! it will suck the memories right out of your head!!! lol

Lol nice, id like to see that running

I spray it through a straw. Wrap a piece of masking tape around the back of the nozzle on the can with enough sticking forward on each side to tape a straw to the front of the nozzle. Then spray it through the straw into a bottle or jar. I usually let it set for a day uncovered to let the propellant gas out before trying to run it through the airbrush. If you need some in a hurry then stir it gently until you stop getting bubbles and the bottle/jar doesn’t cool to the touch. Don’t ever put a lid on it and shake it until it is gassed out because when you loosen the lid it will go everywhere. Trust me on that.

Some people shoot it as it comes from the can. I usually have to thin it. Lacquer thinner should work with DupliColor.

sounds like another great idea. well theres only one thing left to do go down to the basement and try my hand at decanting! thanks for all the advice everyone!!!

This is probably the most dangerous way, but it worked (I have done it a couple of times). Anyway, I needed a LOT of that color. I inverted the can, depressed the nozzle to get all of the spray out of the pickup tube and kept going until propellant was gone… Then, I set it down on a bench upside down and pressed the can down so that it allowed any additional propellant to vent while I worked.

I then used an awl (a solid metal one able to be hit with a hammer) to poke a hole in the bottom of the can. I quickly enlarged the hole with a reamer until it was about three eights of an inch. I then punched another hole near the top of the can, then poured contents into airbrush jars. A bit messy, but it worked.

Safety disclaimer- do NOT do it this way, but it worked for me
