I’m returning to the hobby, but when reading FSM I notice that applying decals isn’t as straightforward as I thought…
They mention applying future floor polish and such like, but I don’t think I can get hold of that over here in England…
So whats the deal with applying decals ‘properly’?
And what products would I need to do this?

Shoot on a coat of gloss clear ( recommend Floquil’s Crystal Clear), apply your decals using a setting solution (Micro Sol or Micro Set), let dry for a couple of days and shoot on a coat of clear (Testors Model Master Semi-gloss Clear or Dull Coat)
As you may note, I have reccommended enamels as that is what I work with. Because of that I don’t feel comfortable reccommending any acrylic clears as I haven’t used them. Hopefully someone here can make some recommendations on acrylic clears.

Swanny, I’ve took a look at your site, some excellent tips on there. I was especially interested at the weathering section.
But just a question about ‘sludge’ washing, having previously read in FSM articles on this subject, am I right in thinking that sludge washing should only be used on ‘gloss’ finishes?
That’s right about sludge wash - only on gloss surface or gloss clear coat such as your ‘kleer’ (in fact you would probably want to put clear coat even over gloss paint just for added protection). The technique requires the the sludge to be wiped off afterwards so it remains only in engraved and indented areas - the shiny surface just makes it easier to wipe without disturbing the paint job underneath.
