Can anyone tell me what SS units used the Jagdpanthers?
Also I’m in the process of building a very large 1/35 diorama of Das Reich in Russia, lots of models roughly 30, and about 150-200 soilders. Tiger tanks will be the focal point, early variants, I plan to have at least 6 of them in the dio, however I want a few of them painted panzer gray. Would this be correct or not?
Depends what year you want your dio. The Germans switched to dunkelgelb in Feb. 43. I’ll have to check my resources on the Jagdpanther. You might look here for SS Jagdpanthers:
I can’t find any info on any Jagdpanthers in the 2nd SS PzDiv, apart from some taking part in the defense of Budapest and the retreat to Vienna. There were some included with the 6th SS Panzer Army, from SchwPzJägAbt 519, and some with 9th SS PzDiv Hohenstaufen and 10th SS PzDiv Frundsberg.
You could depict them coming from schwere Heeres Panzerjäger Abteilung 563, or some other Eastern Front division.
As for color, the Jagdpanther was mostly painted in Dunkelgelb, and sometimes in a base of Wehrmacht Grün, with a two-tone or three-tone camo pattern.
Sounds like an ambitious project! If you are planning to show the Tiger I Earlys along with the Jagdpanthers, this would be highly suspect given the wide gaps in the timeframes in which those vehicles entered service (Tiger I in 1942, Jadgpanther in 1944). Not sure from your question if this is really your intent or not though.
Thank you for the responses, Tigerman, Nikoo, and Wild Bill.
I checked out !Achtung Panzer and read that Das Reich DID have Jag’s. So that helped.
As for the huge dio, the Tigers are the focal point, and I planned around 41-42 in Russia, so of course no Jag’s. I plan to have at least 6 tigers, 3 gray and 3 yellow. I think this would be some what accurate. As big as this dio will be, I just got wind of the Dora- glad I didn’t use my Leopolds and Karls yet for any thing!!! Sevastapool is Calling!!!
The Dora is a massive piece of equipment…the release of that kit was sorely tempting, have to admit…but just couldn’t fathom spending that amount on a single kit…never mind actually building one!
The yellow paint scheme (dunkelgelb) didn’t come into use until mid 1943 and Sevastopol was over in 1942, so while the mix would provide some interesting contrast, it wouldn’t be accurate for the scene you are planning.
The SS Jagdpanther is a small dio I plan to make, basically by itself, maybe a 251/D for company, late war in the 3 color camo.
The Tiger dio will be early war, Russia 41-42 with the early Tiger being the center point. The other vehicles will be support, FAMO’s, 251’s, Horch’s, Zundapp’s, and so on. If I were to mix Tigers with Jag’s the Tigers would be the late versions, or Tiger II’s. None would be Panzer Gray.
As for the Dora dio, no Tigers, or any tanks for that matter just support vehicles ie FAMO’s O.Blitzes, and so on. However reading on the Dora’s short time in use, the K-5E’s, and Karls were used as well in the seige upon Sevestapool, so if room allows I plan to incorporate the Dora, 2 Leo’s, and 2 Karls for that particular dio plus support vehicles. God willing! Glad I have a big basement. So once again thank’s for the information, I guess I should have been more direct with my ?'s.
