Hey there everyone , has anyone ever sed DAP wall putty ? It’s pink when it’s wet but turns white as it dries , so I was wondering if it could be used as a model putty as well , only thing is is will it retain paint or soak it in ? Anyone with any knowledge about this stuff ?

Hey there Walt,
In my opinion, the DAP filler is way too porous for use with the fine pigments and thinness of modeling paints. It works well for it’s intended use and wall paint, as you know, is very thick, and heavy enough to cover it up.
I have used the “lightweight filler” type on my balsa R/C gliders, and had to put a LOT of primer over it to get a smooth finish. Also, the general thickness of it doesn’t allow it to completely get into the fine cracks that we find on models. It also doesn’t stick well (or at all) to plastic as it is a water based product and doesn’t create a chemical bond with the plastic. If you could get it to stay in a joint, it would probably fall out over time unless you had a ton of paint on it to hold it in.
I would stick with the fillers from Squadron or Tamiya (which I hear is better).

Sometimes its too porous for patching walls! I usually have to run some primer over it first before painting. I’ve been using Bondo spot putty, works good and is cheap.
StevenQ - Years ago I painted one of my (full size) cars and used the same type of filler, although by a different brand name. As I remember, they came in a red and green color, and I don’t remember the difference between the two, but they do seem very similar to the squadron putty that I use now. You’re also right in that a tube of the auto filler gets you a lot more for the money than a tube of Squadron.

At a couple bucks a tube it sure is cheaper. Now if they could just get rid of the stink!![:)]
