Daimler-Benz Engines in the Mercedes-Benz Museum

Hello All,

Last week I had the good fortune to visit the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany. it’s a great place full of automotive history! The reason why I’m posting here is there are two aero engines that I was very interested in, the DB 601 A & DB 603 w/ Do 335 Nacelle.

Three times in the past I’ve tried to get decent photos of these engines and failed every time. And I can’t say that these are a lot better, but at least you can see the details. The problem is the super harsh lighting from the top and nearly total shadow on the bottom. Anyway, here are the pics, first up the DB 601 A:

And, one last thing that is still airplane related. This is the Mercedes-Benz T80, designed by Ferdinand Porsche, powered by a DB 603 that would have made an attempt at a world speed record, until the war got in the way… Either way, it’s hard to imagine something with this much power attempting a world speed record on the Autobahn! They are great highways, but there is no straight line very long, they curve constantly (even if banked slightly) to help keep the driver’s attention. The fastest I’ve ever driven on one was 163 Mph, and let me say that was exciting - it’s hard to imagine twice or more than that in 1930s era technology… Either way, this is a beautiful exhibit:

I rarely see any photos of the rear and lower areas of Daimler Benz aircraft engines.[t$t]

Spruce-ce Goose, I’m right there with you! In a way, that was exactly why I was going nuts trying to get decent shots of them…

Thanks for the photos. I’m an engine nut- looks like there are a few others here too. I was happy to see Williams bros under new active management and that they are repoping some of their engine kits. Those large scale engines are among WB best kits. Unfortunately the two they are offering right now are the two I had already built. Sure wish they’d do their Wright engine. I have a 601 resin engine your pictures will help with.

The WB kits are all air-cooled radials. Sure wish someone would kit a few large scale water-cooled inlines or Vs. Not all aircraft engines were round!
