D-day stripes in 1/72

Hey all…quick question for you.

I can’t seem to remember how wide D-day aircraft stripes should be in 1/72.
For some reason I have 6mm stuck in my head, but my gut is telling me 10mm…Quick! Save me from myself!

Scott,
I depends on the aircraft you’re modelling - I’ve read that according to SHAEF Operational memorandum No.23 issued in April of 1944, stated these stripes were to be comprised of three white and two black stripes, being 18" wide for single engine aircraft, and 24" wide for multi engined aircraft.
In 1/72 scale, that means that the 18" stripes are scaled to 0.25 of an inch (1/4") and the 24" stripes, in 1/72, would be 0.33 of an inch (1/3").
I prefer to use the metric system - I won’t go into the maths, but in 1/72 scale, the 18" stripes are very close to 6.5mm wide, and the 24" stripes are close to 8.5mm.
The March 2003 issue of FSM has an article explaining it all.
Good luck!

Lee,

Thanks for the information. I wasn’t aware of that specifiction, but I guess I should have realized that the military would have it spelled out to the nth degree.

Great! Thanks for the information… I thought I remembered reading an article like the one you mentioned but when I searched through my back issues of FSM I couldn’t seem to find it!

Thanks again for your help-
