i am working on the cvn 65 big e , i am beginning to paint the hull i didnt use the recommended mixture of paints by tamiya but instead used tamiyas hull red it looks ok but i dont think it is the right color , does anyone know if the mixture tamiya gives comes out to be the correct color or is the hull red ok to use ?
As far as below the waterline goes, what is “right” is what looks right to you. While obviously cherry red metalflake would not be a good choice, pretty much any dull, flat red would be fine. I used Floquil Boxcar Red on my Big E update because, ummmmm, it was marked down and on sale at the hobby shop. Testors flat red out of the rattle can is much too bright (my first attempt at a full hull model demonstrated that) but other than that, go with what the instructions suggest for mixing the paints.
Tamiya’s Hull Red is a brown which is more correct for WWII IJN applications.
Modern USN Hull Red is more of a red-orange color than brown. My favorite hull red is American Tradition Red Primer available in the jumbo economy-sized rattlecan from the local Lowes.
In modeling-sized paints, White Ensign’s Norfolk 65 hull red is good (it is enamel). In acrylics The MM Acryl II Marine line of paints is correct also. Some will recommend a 50/50 mix of Insignia Red and Flat Black
Many of the model railroad boxcar reds are good too. Mineral Red is good, as is red zinc-chromate
Kenny, I used Tamiya hull red on my Tamiya Big E, and it looks fine. Its the centerpiece of my model room in fact. I also used all the GMM sets available at the time (1993-4, I believe)
I believe I used MM enamel light or dark ghost gray for the superstructure.
Hey Kenny i just read your post and thought i would get involved as i to am working the big e.I used american accents made by rust-oleum colonial red.Got it from hobby lobby for i think 3-5 bucks and it’s 12 oz can .I feel the color come out right, since i’m not one for mixing paints and airbrushing.
Pretty good the ship itself is actually complete but still working on the dio part of it.Iwas going to post some pics to pick yalls brain but ran out of time leaving to take the little on to dance class.Maybe later tonight i can get those pics up,i’m really needing some feedback on my prop wash.
I am building the “E” too. I mixed the Tamiya acrylics per the instructions. It came out looking like yours! A coat of gloss and it should look good. My question is how to paint a righteous waterline. I can’t seem to mask it straight. Can anyone out there help out a beginner. Are you guys adding hangar decks and all that? I had already put my flight deck on when I saw some photos of that 16’ model. That sure is cool!! I did ok on the GMM photo etch though. I was pretty proud for a beginner or noob in gaming speak, lol!! But seriously any help would be greatly appreciated.
