CV8 vs CV12

Are these both designations for Hornet? If so, could someone explain. Thanks What is the 1:350 Trumpeter?

CV-8 is the original Hornet - Yorktown Class, sunk at Santa Cruz

CV-12 is USS Hornet II - Essex Class, named after the above mentioned ship.

Same name, COMPLETELY differnet ships.

The USS Hornet (CV-8) was a Yorktown class carrier commissioned in 1941. This was the ship that carried and launched the B-25’s of the Dolittle raid on Japan i early 42, fought at Midway, and was sunk during the Battle of Santa Cruz in late Oct 1942. This is the ship the Trumpeter kit represents.

The USS Hornet (CV-12) was an Essex class carrier named in honor of (CV-8’s) short but illustrious career. It was commissioned on Nov 23, 1943 and served with distiction thruout the rest of the war.
