Cutting Technique

What the best way to cut a hole in a fusalage, be it a car, tank, etc. I have a car where I want to cut a rectangle in the hood to add a scoop.

I’ve tried before and it was messy and irregular. Use a saw, dremel? Thanks!

Use some masking tape to mask around the area you’ll be cutting and use either a #11 razor saw or a JLC saw. Masking around the area will help to keep you from scratching the surrounding area.

Here’s how I do it. First I drill a starter hole with a pin vise. Then using a straight edge or template if possible, score the outline with a chucked sewing needle or a scrapper meant for scrapping plastic seams. Then I use a #11 blade with saw-teeth, starting from the starter hole and saw away. The scored outline helps to keep your cut straight. The hint about using tape also helps.

My favorite technique for doing this to irregular surfaces is to scribe through, using tape as a guide as Fred suggests. Electrical tape seems to work best for me.

[tup] DYMO Labeling tape, the embossing tape used in those squeeze type hand labeling machines. It has an adhesive surface that holds very well while giving a more than adequate edge for scribing.
