I may just brave my freezing basement and use my airbrush after all on my Panther group build project. Problem is that I don’t have much Tamiya acrylic thinner right now, just four of the little bottles. And I don’t think I’ll have time to get a bigger bottle. (Bigger issue – I don’t think my compressor is working correctly! [:0])
Anyway, compressor issues aside, I wonder how a Tamiya thinner/alcohol hybrid will work as a thinner? Anyone ever tried this? I usually just use the Tamiya acrylic thinner to thin their paints for airbrushing, but that deosn’t look like it’s gonna happen.
Thoughts? Should I just order some and wait for it to come, or should I mix what I have with isopropyl to get the job done?
I recently heard of people using “windex”. I only use PollyScale thinner (no water, no alcohol), and to tell u the truth, it looks like windex but smells like narcotic windex
Try to mix a small cup (adding drops slowly at atime) of windex to thin it since you are out of thinner. I personally had tamiya paint turn to gum on me when i added alcohol.
My Tamiya Basic Compressor is not very strong and the instructions specify the thinning mix ratios for each type of paint. For Tamiya Acrylic Paints, I only use 90% Isoprophyl Alcohol as thinner for Tamiya Acrylics. Those Tamiya Acrylic Thinners are very small (and expensive in the long run). I remember using water and it is also acceptable but I prefer alcohol because it allows quick drying of paint.
Try to experiment on this and you might find it OK (and economical, too)
I’ve never tried water but I mainly shoot Tamiya acrylics. I’ve never tried Windex either… but I have read about it as well as rubbing alchohol. I cut my paints with Tamiya thinner which smells so toxic!
When I shoot Future I clean out my brush with windex or rubbing alchohol. But I also shoot some water thru afterwards since somebody else mentioned that the alcohol can hurt an airbrush.
I use isopropanol or isopropyl alcohol (I think it’s the same stuff) to thin my Tamiya paint,
I prefer it to water
I’ve heard some people use the wind screen wash (the blue stuff) it adds no colour either
Since I have been on here , I have used rubbing alchohol exclusively for my airbrush work , much cheaper dries much faster , and makes you go blind if you drink it ![;)]
I use 70% isopropyl rubbing alcohol from the drug store. It works well; as good as Tamiya original thinner. But when you use to mix with Gunze Sangyo acrylic(Mr. color), don’t use too much, it may result droplets on surface.
I found that if you mix a lot of alcohol with the tamiya paints it leave like a CARC paint job effect or a faded look ( sun bleached ). It could also be due to the manufacture of alcohol?
