Currently flying B-17's

If there is already a thread about this, forgive me. I searched, but didn’t see one.

Over the past 2 months, I’ve been privileged to do some volunteer work on “Liberty Belle.” She spent some time at Double Eagle II airport, in Albuquerque, NM. Mostly, I just did grunt work, and was glad to be part of the project. She has a newly-rebuilt #2 engine, and now sports 2 Wrights and 2 Studebakers. The coolest thing I did was to pull the navigator’s and radio operator’s desks out and refinish them. I stripped off what was left of the old varnish, steamed out what dings and dents I could, filled some of the deeper gouges and cracks, sanded 'em off good, and varnished them with plain, old, oil-based spar varnish. They came out looking pretty good. I also did some restoration on the little gooseneck lamp on the navigator’s desk. If you have a chance to see the Belle this season, be sure to check on my work!

Next year, I’m hoping to be able to refinish the bombardier’s deck, which is pretty weathered, being up there under the sun so much. Don’t know if it will ever happen, but it would be cool! It was incredible to get to know things about a Fort you can only learn by busting knuckles, and I’m here to tell you, the Belle has enough of my DNA to convict me of being a B-17 geek!

In the process, I took about 200 digital pictures of the “walk-around”, pointless, anal-retentive, detail kind of stuff like structural details, rivet patterns, wheel well details, and even a few of the inside of the wing, taken from an access panel near #2. The pictures are 8MP, so emailing them is out of the question, but I’d be willing to make them available if y’all think there’d be any value to it. Is there a site or organization that would be interested in having these pictures?

Does anyone make decals for currently-flying aircraft? I’d sure like to build a model of “my” Fort, but would feel real bad about having cruddy-looking nose art.

I’m trying to get a couple of my decal manufacturing buddies to release sheets of the “airshow” warbirds. It takes some convincing because it is a limited market. I’m still lobbying hard though!

The Air Resources Center (ARC) has an area for walk arounds, Steve might be willing to host the photos for you. It definately sounds like the kind of thing people could use.

Sure would be nice to have some sheets for the current airplanes! I had to make my own for “Aluminum Overcast” when I made that model for a friend of mine who got his type rating last summer. With an ALPS, it is maddenlingly hard to get flesh tones correct.

I’d love to see those pics! Besides putting them up on arc you could upload them to photobucket and post a link to the album for us to look at. As far as decals goes, nobody makes any for the airshow forts. 909 is the only one who’s had a decal sheet. I had to make a set for Fuddy Duddy and sentimental journey. You can get a die cast of liberty belle though, postage stamp airplanes makes it, of liberty belle. I picked one up at the airshow last year.

Gerald, keep at em! I’d love to see that done!

If you have a printer and some white decal paper, there’s nothing saying that you can’t make your own… I make mine on a cheap Lexmark ink-jet, then apply Testor’s Decal Bonder to the the sheet…

I would also like to see some decals for the Forts currently on the airshow circuit. WOuld really like to model “Aluminum Overcast”.

Gerald- Good luck lobbying, I shall keep my fingers crossed for one of your buddies to agree to them.

I too would love to see decals of the flyable 17s. There’s only 13 flying, so it shouldn’t be to hard to put them all in one set! Many more on display! I’m sure there would be a lot of interest in these decals.

Me too!!!

Gerald, that would be terrific! Add my name to a petition, or whatever.

As for printing my own, I have an HP deskjet, and it makes sort of a dot-matrix print. I tried making some buzz letters for a ‘72 scale fort, and they were just polkadots. I ended up putting them on the model, then masking them and airbrushing them. It worked okay, but, MAN! It took for freakin’ ever! Other than the ALPS printers, which apparently aren’t available anymore, have any of y’all had decent luck with specific desk jet or laser jet printers?

Also, I"ll contact the folks at ARC and see what they say. Thanks for the feedback!

I’ve used inkjet printers to make decals with good results, what do you think, have a look
