What is your BEST modeling habit? Always clean up after each session, read the instructions three times before starting, keep one model on the bench at a time?
And your WORST? Do you never clean your brushes, leave the lids off of paint, skip reading the instructions…???
My best is the first you mentioned. I clean up after every session, or at least straighten things up. My worst habit is not finishing the stupid things!
Best habit: One build at a time, start-to-finish. I’ve done this for years now and never have to worry about the “shelf queen” syndrome. [;)]
Worst habit: Forgetting to replace the cap on the tube of my CA gel when working with PE. This has resulted in quite a few cases of tubes of glue being rendered useless and requiring replacement.
Best habits–diligently cleaning the airbrush after every color; working patiently on one model at a time and never rushing; cleaning up the desk between builds.
Worst–taking certain steps in the directions for granted without following the directions closely–like putting my Ferdinand’s suspension bogies on opposite sides! (What a mess to rectify!) and ruining brushes by cutting the bristles down to special lengths and shapes for certain techniques and detail painting!
Best: Patience. My most recent scratchbuild took me three years… Throw in cleaning the airbrush dilligently (I haven’t much choice, I want the durn thing to work right…) and being strict about not starting kits unless I have a reasonable chance of finishing them inside the same year…
Worst: Messy workbench, spending too much on my hobby and kits taking up too much space in the house.
Best - Cleanup, not only the bench, airbrush but the entire room.
I see this in most of the threads. Are Armor modelers anal?? Are we on such a quest that we keep our area like a sterile operating room? Manny…as our resident Dr. Phil, what do you think?
Worst - At times rushing. Trying to learn to stop, get up walk around and relax and slow down.
I am almost always working on two or three things at the same time. I have been getting better about put things back where they go, it makes things much easier to find. But, I don’t clean up as well as I should.
But, I think that two of my good habits are cleaning my brushes well (ruinning a $4 brush is not good). My other good habit is not only do I put the lid back on paint but, I wipe the rim off very cleanly, so I can open it again with out using pliers.
I’ve been pretty good about cleaning the AB after use, so I guess that seems to be a good habit. Another one is always capping everything that can evaportate or dry up.
I have a really bad case of starting multiple kits and only finishing about 30% of them. And my hobby room is such a wreck that my wife is to the point now that instead of cleaning it, she only closes the door. On the plus side, the cat is terrified of that room, so it keeps her (and her hair) off the kits.
Best = i guess my best habit is i am organised to the point of being OCD not always tidy but untidy in an organised manner, this allows me to focus entirly on the chore at hand and is why i cannot have two builds or unfinished builds on the bench i have tried and i dont enjoy it
Worst = impatience, i hate waiting for things to dry
I totally am in agreement with Doog on the Best Habits,my airbrush is my "Ark of the Covenant", and I never neglect that bad boy. I’m always trying to rearrange my work station so that everything I require is at arms length.
Bad Habits [sigh] I crank up the air compressor and paint in my home right at my work station. LOL I know its crazy and I’ve recently bought a respirator so at least I’m concerned about my respiratory system now! Also, sometimes I get off track with the instructions and I think I’m working of my “own”
I forgot to add this until Jenn reminded me: my definite “worst habit”.
Painting with my “good clothes” on–jeans, new shirts, etc,–and absentmindedly wiping my paint-covered fingers in them, immediately and completely consigning them to the “old” drawer! [sigh]
Best: That’s a tough one. How about only buying a new kit that I think I’ll actually build. Or, only buying AM parts for something I actually have in the stash, or something I have definate plans for. These are both NewYear’s resolutions, actually.
Worst: Having about 19 kits in various stages of progress. “Completion” is not a good word around me…
Best: Capping everything immediently, Cleaning AB and brushes immediently and religiously. One or two projects on the go at once. (I have a 1/16 figure im painting in oil so I build inbetween oil painting sessions).
Worst: Modeling sprawl. I cannot for the life of me manage to keep my workspace tidy. Making a mistake and rushing the rest of the painting process. Stealing the windex from the household cleaners cupboard when my personal bottle is empty.
Doog, I too am guilty of distroying new items of clothing. Problem is nothing ever gets spilled when I wear my old clothes
Best- cleaning the airbrush and other tools. I guess that’s the old cavalry motto instilled in me. “The horse, the saddle, the man” referring to taking care of your mount and arms first before you relax.
Worst- not leaving well enough alone. This one drives my wife nuts. I will take a step all the way back to start if I’m not satisfied. Even if it’s off just a little and the average person would never notice.
