Best advice I can offer you is to just keep experimenting and enjoy yourself. Figure painting gets adictive when you start getting the results you WANT.
So just keep going and doing what works while adding new ideas on top of it all. You will get the results you want. It only takes practice to get there.
Joe: Man, you are really, really good! I can see why you were offered your position. Keep schoolinā us, mate.
James: Niiiiice. You obviously have a nice command of your skin tones. He appears flush, as if he just got through something intense. Good effect for a tanker.
I did a comparison of face painting using 3 shades of flesh-colored craft paints and a pre-blended set of 6 Andrea Flesh Paints. I used the same brushes, priming, and paint techniques. When finished I could not see any difference between the two mediums. Both figures had some slight grainy quality under magnification. There was a difference if you considered the prices!
Thats the key for my thinking, from a distance how does it look, up close and or under magnifying glass its going to look another. I try to make it the best i can, but my priorty is to get as much eye candy for myself and the avg person looking at it from a distant.
