I’ve got a project in the works that has me baffled to a certain extent. I plan on using the Tamayia M-5 light tank, but there’s more to this. I want to convert it over to deisel (I think the Marine tanks were deisel), and use the AFV tracks tracks. Did the Marines use these tracks in the Pacific? Also somebody makes a deisel conversion for this tank. Anybody know who?
The M5s only had gasoline engines. Either of the AFV Club track sets would be appropriate for the M5/M5A1s in any theatre (the equipment wasn’t geared to which branch (i.e. USMC) but was just produced at the factory).
Now the earlier M3 and M3A1 had both gasoline and diesel versions.
I don’t have any real reference material, but they did actually build a deisel powered M-5 tank. I know that the grills are made different, but for the life of me I don’t remember where and when I saw it. I may scan thru a bunch of old back issues of FSM (I have them from vol. one). The track set was most important to me anyway. If I run accross it I’ll post it here (maybe it was a prototype).
Sorry Squeakie: You’re mistaking the M3 Stuart light tank.
The M5 and M5A1 only had twin Cadillac engines (gas).
In the earlier M3 series, they had the following
M3, early: Continental W670 Gas
M3 Diesel, mid: Guiberson T1020 diesel
M3, late: Continental W670 gas
M3A1, Continental W670 Gas
M3A3, Continental W670 Gas
I can vaguely recall the FSM article you’re citing. It was about USMC M3 Stuarts, not M5s. If you poke around Formations models, they have various bits for the Academy M3 and M3A1 stuarts. Tiger Model Designs has some too. Best of luck to you
well after looking thru everything I had, you are right. It was the M-3 that was built with a deisel. I’d have sworn it was the M-5, but I’ll now set down for a plate of crow. Anyway the M-5 is the one I gathering parts for, and who knows maybe an M-3 later. I did find the FSM article on the M-3.
