Costly

Not really Mike … You need three kits to finish one. Get mad, stomp it. Get mad, throw it. Get mad and hold temper because it’s the last one you have [:)]

let me compare the hobbies/passtimes i have, min. $20 a week for leagues as well as $250 to $300 for new ball and $16 for glove (my hand sweats like a river when i bowl) $150 for shoes not to mention $100 to $150 per season for the assorted tape, liquid bandages, etc. that means over the nine month season total of about $1300. lets see basketball $100 to $150 for shoes, $30 ball, $60 knee supports/braces, $300 to $500 yr for assorted broken bones, sprains, etc.

now for modeling in six months approx $250 for kits, approx $100 for paints, approx $50 for other supplies, $100 for two airbrishes, $300 for assorted other items needed/wanted.

for me modeling is pretty comparable to my other passtimes/hobbies. the cost is relative i bowl twice a week and two tourneys, i play basketball on avg once or twice a week, i model about twenty hours a week. so the cost over time for me is relatively inexpensive. the satisfaction i get from modeling though is no comparison.

Joe,
If you want to go that route:
Hockey Goaltending,
Skates $175
Helmut $150
Chest protector $125
Cup $55
Blocker $175
Catch $275
Pads $500
Sticks $35 a pop, one collision and they’re scrap.
Icetime, skies the limit.

Diving,
Reg $300
BCD $ 275
Wetsuit $325
Mask/fins $125
Everytime you step on a boat out of Jersey $75.
Trips, Caymans, Hawaii-out of control.

Not to mention 2 Kayaks and Mountain bikes.

Heck, even something as simple as darts ends up with $125 for a set of Hammerheads and at least $50 bar tab a night.

At least modeling doesn’t give me a body covered with welts and bruises.

I think I just talked myself into another kit.[;)]

lol…nice breakdown, ausf!

Dan

Last month I bought Revell’s 1/72 Fw190, as well as some aftermarket stuff, cost break down as follows:

Kit £3.50 $6.30
Resin cockpit £6.00 $10.80
PE Flaps £3.00 $5.40
Resin wheels £2.50 $4.50

Total cost £15.00 $27.00

So far this has taken me 6 weeks to build, and still has another 2 weeks to go.

8 weeks fun for £15, works out at £1.88 $3.38 a week.

It’s as expensive as you make it.

Karl

This is the point of view of a person from a 3rd world country where the minimum daily wage is roughly US$6 per day

1.) and the average cost of a 1/72 A/C kit is US$6-10
2.) and the average cost of 1/35 Armor kit is US$10-20
3.) and the cost of a small bottle of Tamiya paint is US2$

It is INDEED a costly hobby.

I don’t believe in paying that much money for equipment

skates: given to me by my grandparents
helmet: $20 (secondhand) + $25 for goalie cage and throat protector (1/2 off sale)
chest protector: $75 (1/2 off sale)
cup: $10 (wally world special)
blocker: $70 (1/2 off sale)
catcher: $80 (1/2 off sale)
pads: $85 (flea market in near mint condition)
sticks: anywhere from $70-$130
icetime: everytime I play for 2 hours: $5-$10

I have slowly collected a complete set of equipment over the years starting to play with a pair of old 10" pads, a stomach protector, helmet, street hockey catcher, and an old moth eaten blocker.

No it just gives you a body covered with CA glue and PE and Tiger turrets.

If you played a quasi-butterfly style in front of a lot of angry NYC cops and firemen, this is one piece of gear you don’t skimp on. [;)]

Modeling, just like any other hobby, is only as expensive as we make it. This is a point already voiced by someone here. I believe it was J-Hulk.
It’s our own greed that makes it an expensive hobby. Most of us want the better thing, and WILLINGLY pay for it. That really is the bottom line. We do this willingly. I don’t see the point of this thread at all. If you don’t like paying so much, don’t. We all have choices. Many of you argue against kits of lower quality. Well, the choices ARE there. Monogram kits, Italeri, Trumpeter, they’re all fairly cheap kits. You don’t think they don’t build into decent models? Put more work into them, scratch-build for them, it’ll extend their longevity and your enjoyment of them that much more.

Now put that into Canadian dollars, and the numbers for that I paid for my goalie equipment are even higher. Even rugby, which doesn’t require anywhere near the kit outlay still costs me about a grand a year to play. I haven’t paid near that for modeling even though I have had to completely replace all my tools. I won’t need to buy a new compressor, airbrush etc for the next several years, and I don’t have time to complete more than three or four kits a year, so modeling actually comes in quite inexpensively.

Two things come to my mind when I think about how the costs have soard over recent years. First thing is inflation, we all are seeing prices of things rise, some countries outside the US are really seeing this, and another is the PE and aftermarket goodies that are being made, most of these are custome made in garages and basements and are part of the growing “cottage” industry. These items would cost much more because they are made in limited runs and materials. Someday, PE and aftermarket may be made by huge corporations that have control over the cost of resin thus making the price much lower than what we see today. But until then, I guess I’m paying $40.00 for a cockpit set that will go into a $25 model.

do it yourself: dont like the detail? don’t. too much work? don’t. like more details? do it your slef

sorry mike monograms or revell kits are more expensive , after you spend £34.99 on the piece of trash , you then spend £3.50 on paints , £24.99 on a rubbish resin update set , spend 3 days trying to get it all to fit , no joy , you then spend £28 .50 sending the kit and resin to bruce in canada , who then spends $$$$ on rockets so he then can blow it up, so a cheap im no going to waste my time saying thier names , costs now over £100 , buy the tamiya and save your money and your sanity [2c]

It’s all in the eye of the beholder. I don’t mean to offend anyone, but are modelers such prissies? Does everything have to be perfect? Seems like people will overlook anything for Tamiya and other higher quality brands. I don’t think there is a damn thing wrong with Monogram and the like kits. I started on kits like those, and even now usually go for the cheaper thing. You all list off options that you want on the Monogram kits. Well, DON’T GET 'EM! What’s wrong with an OOB kit? Given a choice, I’d rather get a cheap kit, but at least HAVE a kit, instead of bitc**** and complaining about the price of them. Sorry for fuming, but the FACT is that we DO have a choice! I’m not saying that the hobby is cheap. Far from it! But it can be as expensive or as cheap as you want it to be.

zokissima , i agree with you i wont be buying monogram/revell any more , i started with airfix they where cool , as for tamiya i buy them because they are easy , oob little gluing little screwing together bingo done , the money i pay on kits i would expect them to be easy to put together , dosen’t matter if its £30 or £100 , any way ah youll like this one on the radio the other day i heard about a site called oz prison b###h name generator , im wishbone???

I think that many of you might not see the whole point of it all…yes, it can be, and somtimes truly is, an expensive hobby.
But for some modelers, for that ONE special subject close to your heart, no amount of money spent on a model is really too much.
Ask Shermanfreak - would he buy that expensive engine/interior set for that special build? The aftermarket tracks? The cast drive sprockets? The aluminum barrel? The Verlinden crew? Probably (and I bet he HAS!).
For my special subject (a P-51D), I’ve got the cockpit set, weighted tires, aftermarket decals, resin prop blades, resin wheel well - the lot. I was careful and made sure the resin bits were better than the kit parts. She’s going to be a ripper.
BUT - the point I’m trying to make is that I don’t mind spending all that money and time on THIS subject. I don’t do it for every model - but to me it made sense because of the passion I hold for the subject. I enjoy mating the resin jigsaw puzzle to the plastic. I enjoy that extra scratchbuilding necessary to complete the model. I enjoy the feeling of accomplishment of a job well done.
Yes, it’s expensive, but it’s better than blowing the money at the blackjack table.

I’m the guy that recently complained about the high cost of Trumpeter’s P-38. But I agree with LeeTree here. If you really want it…go for it. I also collect classic cameras and I’m not even going to hint at what I’ve sprung for a classic I really want. Not quite the same as model building. There are collectors on Ebay that see me bidding and they just leave! I guess it comes down to in this life. Isn’t that what money is for? After most of the bills have been paid of course.
