Correct fuselage color for F-8E Crusader of VMF(AW)-235?

This is the old Monogram kit; the instructions simply say “light gray” without an FS number. MM’s light gray is very pale, but would probably match the box art. The only photo I’ve found of this a/c (0328) is b&w, which helps me not at all. Any thoughts (or better yet, color photos)?

The F-8s were almost always light gull gray top-side and insignia white on the bottom.
The control surfaces on the top may be white also, Check you reference for a particular aircraft.
Gloss Gull Gray FS 16440 (FS 36440 = Flat)
Insignia white FS 17875 (FS 37875 = flat)

The edges of the landing gear doors are insignia red and the inside of the doors are also gloss white as is the wheel wells. the cockpit is a mediaum gray with black instruments and side panels. The ejection seats are usually flat black, but may also be the same color gray as the cockpit interior. The nose radum is usually matte black.

As for color photos try a Google search using “F-8 Crusader”. There are numerous web sites with aircraft photos, including the Crusader. There is also a web site dedicated to the “Last Gunfighter”.

If that is the model I remember, one of the aircraft that markings are given for is on display at the Marine base in Hawaii. But you may have a later reissued kit with different markings (decals). Hope this helps. rangerj

Thanks a ton, that’s what I needed! [:D]
