Ive been curious as to how hard it would be to convert revells ch53 gs to a ch53 echo. It seems to be the only ch 53 made in 1/48 scale. Im not too familiar with the gs model, but I am familiar with the delta and echo. I know the differences between the D and the E are not too major. The in air refueling boom, location of the gas cap and some other equipment that can be scratch built rather easily. The picture I saw of the gs looks like a Delta at a glance. Perhaps it might be easier to convert it to a Delta which wouldnt be too bad since the Marines are still using them in limited numbers and they have seen service in Iraq. Anyway, lets talk about it. I might make it one of my upcoming projects if its not too much of a hassle to to. Thanks … Rich
GS is the German designation for a C or D model. E model is a completely different helo and can’t simply be converted. It is strestched, widenend, has 7 blades as opposed to six, third engine, larger tail plane, etc., etc. You can’t make a E model by simply converting an existing kit, you would have to scratch it in 1/48 or try to get one of the out of production Italeri 1/72 CH-53E kits. Sorry.
Thanks for the info Heavy…So Delta is the way… Thats cool with me…It will be nice to have a USMC ch53 in 1/48…it would make for a cool diarama or display maybe along with a ch 46… Its definitely something I would like to build in the future. Too bad an Echo is not available in 1/48.
I 1/48 scale dio of a Phrog and 53D…[:)] I’d go with HMM-265 (REIN) markings, since they were deployed for OIF II. 265 had CH-53Ds vice the usual 53Es on their deployment.
A diorama of a Phrog and a Delta… sounds interesting. Once I get home I plan on building the same type of diorama. I have several pictures of both aircraft, from HMM-265, from their deployment to Iraq. I also have several interior shots as well. If you’re interested, I can e-mail them to you.

I just got the old 1981 CH-53A the one with the Jeep and 155, off of e-bay for $35. Its F-ing cool.
I’ll see ya over, in the Sand box Marine.
Yeah, unfortunately it’d be easier to scratch a CH-53E, than to convert a Delta or G into one. I love my echos, even though they make me work hard every day.
[yuck]Shitters $uck and Phrogs RULE.[bow]
Did you go to the last W.T.I? Devil or ridleusmc
SSgt…I didnt go to WTI…I just got back from Iraq in early March…Before that we did “Desert Talon” in Yuma to train for expeditionary farps. Im a reservist, so I dont think with the timetable they had to activate us that they fit it in before deploying us. I also think that they were more concerned about Desert Talon since it has more to do with our mission.
We have a det going out to D.T to day, but thank god Im not going.
Yeah I heard it sucks ( WTI )…I know Desert Talon did! But I must say it was good training now that its over.
Hey Brian I was over there with hmm 265…they were a good bunch of guys…I fueled them up all the time.
Hey Devildog-
I’m still here, at the same base you were. I’m a nast y civilian contractor now, but used to work on Deltas out of K-Bay. It was great to seem them out here, and to work on them once again. This base is growing a great deal, and rumor has it that it’ll become a PCS rotation for the Air Force, with one-year unaccompanied tours and all. Permanent barracks are going up; lots of construction. I’m with HMH-465 now, but am ready to leave here. Working on Shitters again has been great, but there’s only so much of Iraq a person can take!

hey deutschebo i was wondering if i might be able to get a look at those pics you have of the 53D
Well its good you’re on your way out Brian…Although Im sure you made some nice $ as a civilian. Anyway did u get to see the squadron of Deltas that was out there? I think they were from K-bay…Most likely the same ones you worked on when you were in. Anyway thanks for the info about all the construction and stuff…I remember there were crews ripping down old buildings and compressing the sand, I guess to prep for construction on parts of the base. Anyway, hopefully one day Ill see some pics of the place after all the work is done…I have no plans on returning there. Well get home safe…[:)]
minihasek- sorry for the delay in responding… the internet access isn’t always reliable over here. Trying to figure out how to post pics on the forum… any idea?
devildog1rh- yep, almost outta here (55 days). It’s getting really hot now, which makes for a long, dreary day. I remember the Deltas that were here, and one of them was from my old squadron (now disbanded - HMH-366 Hammerheads). It was fantastic to work on them once more. They made some spectacular takeoffs, much more interesting than these Echo types. There’s now a twenty-year lease on this base, so it’ll definitely be built up a bunch. Rumor has it it’s going to be an Air Force facility, so I guess it’s just a matter of preparing the golf course and O-Club! Take care!
