I have been tried a few track painting styles so far, but honestly I like yours the most which is what I think I will now drift to permanantly. But I do have one quick question. After you paint the non-buffing gunmetal and dry brush the steel you use an enamel rust or an artist oil color of similar shading. Is this just because this what you have, or would an acrylic work just as fine? I read in one log about “blending” the steel and gunmetal, but was not sure if that meant that the thinner sort of blurrs the steel and gunmetal together while the rust color adds a touch of weathering or if the rust color is what does the blending.
I also really dig your pigment style. I am not a big fan of caked on mud and big ole runny chipping which is why I really like your style. Used not abused is what some would say.

Brian, how I’ve painted tracks has evolved slightly over time but all the paints I use are either enamels or lacquers, not acrylics. I don’t know how acrylics would respond to the kind of process I apply to be honest. I no longer apply the Rust wash unless I’m working on spare track runs for example because I found that through the pigment application any benefits of the Rust wash were largely lost, so that eliminated a step and sped up the process a bit. Since all of the colors I use are enamels, when I apply the wash it does blend/mute the Steel but that’s due to the thinner action as well as the use of the darker color (usually Raw Umber now instead of Rust). I should also note that I don’t use artist oils even though that’s what most people think about when you say things like Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, etc. Testors Model Master line of enamels actually has enamel paints with those same colors and I use those vs. artist oils with the same name.
