With the family out of town, I set up shop in the breakfast room to decal the P-47 and do some masking work on the P-38 I’ve been working on for the P-38 GB.
Stepped away for 30 seconds, and our yellow lab took advantage to search the table for food. He’s sporting a cone of shame from some recent surgery, and in his search he managed to knock the Lightning off the table. Then, on his way down, he landed right on it.

So frustrating…but I guess it’s better than when he coned our 7-month-old daughter on Christmas. So ready for the dish to come off. In combination with a clumsy, spatially-challenged lab, it’s a recipe for disaster.
Heh…if that dog was mine Id already be diggin a hole…at least hed have a matching boot hangin outta his [cnsod] to go with the cone!! I love Labs…owned a couple, but never again…can`t take the 2 year “calming down” period with puppies.
Doogs ATX: I feel your pain. My Aussie (see avatar) was chasing the cat yesterday (normal occurance), cat decided his best route was across the work bench. Bottom line… bottle of insigna red (opened of course) on the hardwood and an almost complete P-51 B sliding across the floor. Dog now has one red paw and I have one po’d girlfriend. Amazingly the P-51 B suffered only a dislodged canopy. Any way you can fix the damage?
I guess I’m just “old school” but I see nothing “cute or whimsical” about animals going around busting up things when it is clear they haven’t been trained and/or have no discipline…and I mean no disrespect to anyone with that comment.
Some people just have a higher “put up with it threshold” than others, I suppose…
Havin’ three dogs, 1 beagle, two mutts(about 75lbs each) and two cats, they KNOW better than to come anywhere near my bench. I even have a danged Cardinal that constantly attacks a window just to the right of my bench and the cat just sits at the end of the couch and watches him hit the window time after time and NEVER crosses the bench, all it took was the first time she was found there and a good, but not brutal pop later she stays away. I’m the one who knocks stuff off most of the time. As for the little lady she doesn’t come near the bench as she doesn’t want to be reminded of the money I’ve spent, she just wants to see the final result.
I’ve come to the conclusion that this particular P-38 just doesn’t want to be built.
As for the dog and training, he’s actually always been pretty well trained. As a puppy he was so mellow that he routinely fell asleep in training class. His two flaws, discipline-wise, have always been the tendency to go berserker when there’s a dog on the other side of the fence and to figure out ingenious ways to secure any and all available food.
We broke him of the first with a training collar. The second is much harder, especially with two small kids in the house, and thus a lot of food at Smith-level. We discipline as we can, but with two kids there’s just never the time to do it right. And we can’t do any of the more aggressive techniques (mousetraps on the counters, etc) with said kids around.
I can’t be too mad at him, though. The cone is a massive hindrance and has already gotten him into much, much worse trouble. Believe me, seeing your baby girl smacked over backward by an awkward lab in a cone is a lot more heart-stopping than seeing the P-38 crunched underpaw.
Your dog and our cats seem to be cut from the same mold. If i had kept all of the kits our cats have folded, mangled and mutilated over the last 2 years, I would have to take over the living room closet as well. And they always seem to wait until the kit is almost done. One time I was sitting in the living room watching some TV and I saw my Wife’s cat walk by with a freshly painted 1/48 Testors F104 stuck to her back. I almost cried… When I tried to grab her (which in retrospect was a really dumb idea), she bolted and clutzed out when the plane tripped her up, sending her and the plane crashing into the wall. Cat got a bath (Luckily it was Acrylics) and the model got the trash bin. She totalled it. a 2 week project totally destroyed in 20 seconds by a completely moronic cat.
Yeah, I caught one of our cats rummaging through one of my “stash” boxes today. Been missing some parts lately and couldn’t blame the “carpet monster” having hardwood flooring in the room. Think I found the culprit.
It could have been worse. I used to have a Ferret. If it was shiny and she could get at it, she would steal it. When she died, we found her stash and she could have built 3 or 4 complete kits with what she had in there…
My tabby cat ‘mickey’ has been known to steal plastic sprue and pieces from my work area, last summer i had just painted a P-51 canopy on the sprue, when to the bathroom, and not gone two minutes when i returned, it was gone!
I caught up to him in my kitchen trying to bat the entire sprue around, the lil crook!
With my dogs its the sweeping tail. If I am working on a low table, their passing by can sweep parts off the table. Can’t blame them for being happy. They don’t climb onto the table and try to help me hunt for parts in the carpet monster. It’s just a pity that the one that helps me search through the carpet monster is probably standing on the part and doesn’t know it.
