Completed Tamiya 1/48 Tiger I Early

My first 1/48 model and pretty much my first proper model ever after a near 20-year break (and I’m 33 now…). Tamiya’s Tiger I, OOB except for Hauler grills. Painted with Vallejo Model Air and Model Color acrylics, weathered with acrylic washes and MIG pigments, mud by MIG pigments and Tamiya Weathering Master. Commander from Tamiya’s German Infantry Set. Any questions, feel free to ask.

Nice looking build, particularly after a 20 year lay off.[tup]

Nicely done! I like the way you paint this tank. One thing, it may be just the way photo is showing, but it looks like tank tracks are not completely touching the ground. Sorry, didn’t mean to be picky. [:D]

Thanks for the kind comments.

Yes, the tracks do seem to hover… I’ve used household filler as the base and although I tried to make depressions in it to fit the tracks, they were a bit off… Hence the tracks are on a bit of a lip, although I claim it’s a big rock underneath the tank… [;)]

Nice work, it’s hard to tell that this is quarter scale. The only tip off is the out of scale track cable (Tamiya’s problem, not yours). The 1/35th cables are too fat as well. Good looking model, and welcome to the dark side again Luke!

regards,

Steve

Great job! Much better than I am doing after my almost 30 year layoff! The tank commander looks pretty darn good from what I can see in the photos. Figures are something I struggle with. Will look forward to seeing more from you in the future.

Russ

Again, thanks. Got some stupid comments from my brother so these are most welcome. He’s never seen a tank but think’s it’s “too dirty”.

Russ, I’ve done a lot of 28mm wargaming painting in the past, so these figs are quite easy. If you need any tips, just let me know.

Hello

Good job on that Das Reich Tiger 1…

Greetings

TDC

Great job! Like the ground work too! Nice suttle weathering!

Great build on that kit, good mud job.

I agree with everyone, great paint job and build. It does not look 1/48 scale. I would also agree it would be great if you could pull it down so it sits lower on the base.

Overall a great job and I am looking forward to seeing more builds now!

Have tried, but it won’t move… Will do better on the next one, promise. Thought I could file it down a bit but didn’t quite work.

So for now, imagine the commander going: “Achtung, ein grosse Felsen!” and then holding on for dear life.

Very nice build. I build mostly 1/48 Aircraft, but I’m finding these 1/48 Armor kits very tempting.

Regards, Rick

Very nice, great job on the camo. I really like the base too, but, I see no signs of muddy ground, but the whole underside is muddy. Maybe some muddy track marks behind the Tiger. Sorry, not trying to knock your beautiful build, just an observation.

Thanks Tigerman. The mud on the tracks is supposed to be dry mud, with some darker, ‘fresh’, mud on the tracks and actually (if you look closely) just behind the tracks as well. It didn’t show up as well after it dried so will put some more on there.

Cool. I will probably take you up on the offer. I have a couple figure kits I am going to start working on soon and could use some pointers.

Sure, Russ. Just shoot me a PM or an e-mail. [:)]

Great work, considerig you’ve been out of it for 20 years. You seem to have jumped on the new techniques and products very quickly.

I would not cake mud on so heavily. It lacks a proper transition between the heavily caked on mud, and the clean parts of the vehicle.

Point taken on the muddiness. It was a thing I thought was overdone, and I had done the wheels so nicely too… I’ve redone the mudding, putting a layer of “dried” mud on top, so it has the same hue as the mud on the sides and then some fresh dark mud around the edges of the wheels and the tracks. It looks a bit more balanced now.

Tomorrow I’ll redo the base. I’m thinking of taking a pair of Skybow vinyl tracks and a sheet of clingfilm, then cover the clingfilm in vaseline and press the tracks into the wet plaster on the base with the greased up clingfilm in between so it doesn’t stick, essentially making (hopefully) a nice pair of tracks in the ground. Some grass, a lot of mud, and fingers crossed.

I appreciate all the comments and suggestions. They are all more than welcome. I’m sort of a newbie and since there’s no one else to comment on my builds as I go along it’s good to get critiqued on it.
