Awesome P-40! That’s so cool to be able to do an aircraft of a family member.
That’s weird timing on the thread. I had just made up my mind last night to build my 1/32 scale P-40 in desert markings.

Very nice looking Warhawk you have there! Those AMtech kits don’t have the best of fit, but it looks like you did a great job on getting everything together seamlessly, including the resin nose. I like the little scratchbuilt extras you added that aren’t included in the kit, and the resin control surfaces are a nice touch for the in-flight display.
The weathering looks fine to me. It’s easy to go overboard with it. The only thing I could recommend is some more post-shading to fade the colors, but it’s good as is.
I’m sure your grandfather is going to love the model. Make sure you wish him a happy birthday for me and pass on my thanks for his service. I’ve worn out my first copy of Carl Molesworth’s book for the MTO P-40 units and am on my second. Besides his excellent book there’s not much out there on the 57th FG, so if you haven’t already be sure to record his memories before it’s too late. I wish I could hear his stories of flying the P-40!
Regards,
Mark

Thanks for all your feedback, guys. As always, it’s incredibly rewarding.
Indeed Mark, post shading is the next bridge I’m planning to cross on subsequent builds. I was considering it for this model, but the camoflauge pattern presented complications that i thought would make my first attempt difficult. Thanks for your recommendation.
Nice Work IL2
This model was published in the Reader’s Gallery of the FSM November 2009 (pg 42).
My first published model! [8D]
I’m gonna drop a copy in the mail to my Grandpa. He will be thrilled to see his airplane in the magazine.
Great looking kit!
I’ve been wanting to build this paint scheme in 1/72 but haven’t found decals yet. I’m probably just gonna have to make 'em.
IL2windhawk I can only agree with what has been said above she is just beautiful. Your Grandad is going to love it. I see double congrads are in order too, not only making your Granddads day a very special day you got it published too ! [bow]
Awesome job on the the P-40.[tup]
CONGRATULATIONS!!![party][bow][tup][#toast]
I saw that too and immediately recognized it as yours! Big Congrats!
Very nice and it will obviously be very special for your grandfather. I really like the base and the way the aircraft is “posed”. I’m no pilot but it looks to me like you took the time to position the ailerons correctly for the attitude of the aircraft, very neat. Mind if I ask how you secured the heavy wire support inside of the fuselage? Also congrats on your first published work[tup]
By the way I hope your grandfather has a great birthday and tell him thanks for serving from all of us who reap the benefits of those who sacrifice so much.
Thanks for the good words, guys. I’m excited to get a copy to my Grandfather. Through my research I’ve shared with him, he has only recently realized how well known the 57th FG is even today. Makes him very proud, I’m sure, to know his accomplishments are still recognized. He’ll be really exicted to see his airplane represented in print. ![]()
Gil,
Regarding the mounting method: I used balsa to fill the fuselage. I wrote more about this technique here: /forums/1068904/ShowPost.aspx
Let me know if I can answer any questions
Thanks for the link, lots of really good ideas[tup]
First off… Congrats on a beautiful build my friend…I remember when you first posted your build here and talked about how it was going to be your Grandpa’s birthday gift… Secondly, Yea Buddy… Sweet deal on the publication…
It’s funny, I saw the P-40 and with out seeing your name, I said… I know that guy lol… It’s always nice to see our fellow builders grace the pages of FSM[;)]
