Hi Folks,
I’ve bought a Lindberg North Sea Trawler with the intention of doing some dastar[:$]dly things to it, including adding armaments. Can anyone suggest the most suitable scale for my additions; I don’t want to go off half-cocked.
Hi Folks,

Iron Shipwrights and White Ensign Models might have something you can use.
Anything 1/87 scale ( HO train stuff ) will work too.
In america, I would suggest looking at the Walthers web site.
You may have better luck looking into Roco. If it’s military… and in 1/87 scale they will have it !
I believe Airfix has some 1/87 (HO) stuff as well.
Pretty sure I’ve seen some figs and ground equipment/war weapons!
The Scale Shipyard has resin and brass fittings in 1/96th scale.
Loyalhanna Dockyard has a large selection of fittings in various scales.
Shapeways offers a lot of 3D printed parts.
You guys are quite amazing! Thank you all VERY much for your suggestions and advice, I’ll follow them all up to see what I can use. The boat is a creative steampunk project (an armed airship trader in arms and old-tech) and is a considerable departure from my usual modeling. Lots of new stuff to learn and apply to the model. Once again my thanks.
Indeed, HO scale is the closest. I consider 5% differences about the limit, and HO is closer than that. However, 1:96 scale is very popular in ship modeling. I know PE stuff such as railings and ladders are available in that scale. It is just slightly outside of 5%, and I think it would probably be okay. I have that same kit, and do plan to use 1:96 stuff myself.
Also you can make the scale of the base kit be whatever you choose.
OK. I sort of get what you’re reffering to but it seems there has to be a limit so as not to go overboard.
Not sure who you directed comment to, but you have a lot of room for creative license.
Your primary scaling element is probably figures if you include them.
id think that based on your subject, you’d want access to, well, steam era railroad stuff.
So if you go O scale which is 1/48, your boat is 17” x 48 or 72 feet long. If you go with HO which is 1/87, your boat is 17” x 87 or 124 feet long. You can mess around with the deck houses using windows and doors from cheap plastic railroad building kits.
It sounds like a real fun project. I built a Nemo figure in a diving suit a little while back and had a great time.
Hi “GMorrison”. The reply was to you and thanks for the new post and the extra details.
In my first reply I wasn’t sure how to address you…
Hi,
“Bill” or “GM” is fine too.
