Compatibilty of paints and oil washes

Hi All,

I just posted this under techniques but it probably fits with the painting forum better.

I’m trying some new things with my Stug III and I’m hoping someone can help clarify some aspects of my techniques.

With this kit, I decided to preshade the whole thing with Tamiya Flat black lacquer from a spray can for convenience. I then will paint the basecoat in several thin layers by airbrushing Tamiya dark yellow acrylic. I’m trying to get the appearance of nice shadows in all of the recessed areas. Next, I’ll apply any camo, again with acrylic and then a coat of acrylic matt finish. Here’s where I am not sure what to do. I have previously used watercolours for washes with other kits but this time I would like to try using oil paint thinned with mineral spirits. Do I need to worry about the mineral spirits having any affect upon the underlying enamel preshade coat of black? Will the spirits even be able to penetrate the acrylic layers and get at the enamel?

Any ideas from your own experience would be terrific.

Jim if you let the acrylic cure… say 24 to 48 hours you should be fine… Cured acrylic isn’t affected by the oil based paints… better yet have you tried the future technique? after you get the acrylic down and given it time to dry a day or two, apply future floor wax (http://www.swannysmodels.com/TheCompleteFuture.html)
and let it dry 48 hours… it will protect the underlying paints no matter what! and give a smoother finish to your paint… when you are done detailing using whatever medium you choose… either future again…and then dull coat… or just dull coat!

Personally I think it would be the way to go… it just feels safer weathering for me like that… and it’s easier to wipe up excess etc., on the future gloss versus a dull coat which EVERYTHING sticks to!
