Coming back to the hobby

I used to build scale models years ago, but haven’t touched one going on 15 years now. Most of them have been cars, but I also built a few sci-fi kits along the way. I’m a Star Wars nut, what can I say? I decided to give it a tray again and went ahead and bought the Trumpeter 1/144th Sewolf submarine kit and will be tackling that to display with all the submarine books I have read over the years. This will be my first ship/sub (hence it being a nuke), and am looking forward to the experience. Though it sounds like this kit has plenty of flaws, I’ll probably just live with them and detail what I have to work with. I don’t want to get too discouraged in my foray back into the hobby.

Welcome back! The hobby is somewhat the same yet there have been a lot great changes as well. Here, you’re among fellow modelers which you cap tap as an information resource to help you improve your skills and ease the transition process.

Yes, welcome back!
Personally I came back into the hobby about four years ago and things I feel are plenty different. Just about every aspect of the hobby is changed in some way from paint and materials to techniques from 14 years ago.
One of the biggest changes I believe is the internet. At your fingertips is a resource as vast as the universe. From reference to kits to materials it’s all here and I’ve learned TONS more than I ever thought I knew back then. Some things of old are new to me now because of the net. Back then I’d never heard of resin detail sets or PE or even preshading. Scale effect. The list goes on.
Welcome back to the madness! In a few weeks you’ll understand what I mean.

Thanks, gang! I’m sure I’ll be learning a TON while surfing the forums here.

Nice to have you back in the hobby and nice to meet you. If you’re interested, there’s a 1/144 group build going on if you want.

Sounds cool! Can you give me some more information?

[snWcm] to the forums AND back to the hobby! Lots of talented people round here.

Group builds are simply a group building within a set of rules. Could be ladies only, veterans, world war 2, prototypes, stalingrad etc. In this case, it is simply that it has to be 1/144 scale. The goal is 144 1/144 kits built in a 144 day period from January 1st to May 24th. Someone can join in at any time and the rules have been stretched to allow a kit that needed finished before the official start date to be included. 20 people have 33 kits “in” and there are about 5 or so that have been finished already. It’s mostly aircraft with one tank and a couple sci-fi. I’m been promoting it for Konigwolf/Andrew (I’m webmaster for the 1/144 census {listing of available kits and accessories, plus links and usful bits}), but haven’t officially joined. I may or may not actually be working on a P-47D at the moment and am simply holding out to tease Andrew.[6]

Go over and visit and let him know if you’re interested.

Yup, I might have to check into that. Just today I was eyeing an old model I built in the early '90s where a piece has fallen off. I will most likely fix that tonight. It’s an MPC AT-AT walker, and the head and neck fell off. LOL

[snWcm] to the forums, RedKnight!!! Hope to see you around!

Welcome to the Forums [snWcm]. Glad you’re here.

Regards, Rick

I will be re-gluing a piece on one of my old models tonight (an old MPC AT-AT kit) and maybe post a picture here. Just be kind, it’s about a 20 year-old build of mine.
