Hello all!
I’ve a 1:32 Corsair that is about to need a coat of blue, but WHAT blue? I use primarily Tamiya or MM Acrylics, and I have a few Blue shades, but the Tamiya Sea Blue that I have seems a little too dark. Should I thin it, mix it, or just buy a bottle of Corsair Blue from some vendor that I don’t know about yet?
I’d appreciate any and all suggestions that any one might be willing to share.

If you are doing an overall Sea Blue Corsair, MM Gloss Sea Blue is the proper color to use.

what about tamiya? im pretty much stuck with that in this country, no-one really supplies any other brand, except citidel
Check this link to IPMS Stockhom. There is lots of good info there on several brands. As you will see, Tamiya has lots of “generic” colors, but they dont match up too well out of the bottle to many name/shade specific colors. Tamiya has a blue that is a decent match for one version of Sea Blue, but no the other.
Model Master Sea Blue is a good match for the Corsair blue as you suggested Stik. However, I didn’t thin it properly and it sprayed on with a lot of dried-out texture over the top, almost sand-like. I’m starting the sanding to prepare for a better topcoat in a while, about the same time I have my Hellcat ready for paint…just shoot them both at the same time, and with lighter spray and more coats as I go. Still searching for the magic spot with these airbrushes…tough sometimes.
Dark Sea Blue is FS15042.
Vallejo and Lifecolor both have exact matches available on Sprue Bros.
Gloss Sea Blue 15045 is a very dark, very gray and slightly greenish shade of blue. Tamiya’s XF-17 Sea Blue is too bright, as well as being matte. I’ve had good luck mixing it about 75%/25% with XF-13 J.A.Green to get the non-specular shade of Sea Blue.
If you’re doing the earlier tri-color scheme, this will serve for the darker of the two blues. XF-25 Light Sea Grey with about 15% XF-17 Sea Blue works for the Intermediate Blue, and the third color is just XF-2 Matte White.
For the later overall Gloss Sea Blue, mix the dark blue as above and, when its dry, buff it out to a dull sheen with a paper towel. Dust off any lint, then overcoat with Tamiya Clear Gloss or Pledge with Future Shine.
Model Master paints, among others, save you the bother by having the right colors right out of the tin.
