Cockpit and Wheelwell Masking

Hi again all. I know I can be a pain in the [censored] with all I am asking. but after 14 years of not modeling and just starting back up I still need a little help. I am realy to paint the Corsair and I wanted to know some info on Masking the Cockpit and Wheelwells.

I searched on here and the only pic I saw was this one…

Looks like it should work, but I wanted to know how some of you did it.

Here is what I am working with.

Thanks for all the help and tips all.

Bud

I use wet tissue paper, tape, BMF, liquid mask etc. You might look at this for some tips http://www.finescale.com/FSM/CS/forums/1/627167/ShowPost.aspx#627167.....stay[8D]

All i can do is tell you how I do it. I more or less just stuff the tape in the holes. Make sure that the tape come up the sides so no paint gets in.
are some pics of what I’m talking about.

just gently stuff the cockpit or wheel well with tap mand make sure no paint can get in around through the edges. Just don’t saturate the area when you paint it
Hope this helps.

I use a combination of plastic wrap and tape. I try to use the plastic that wrapped the model box or any sort of plastic wrapping like that to save $$$.

Not pictures of the wheel wells, but I use the same process and the end result looks like the cockpits stuffed with plastic and tape.

I stuff the plastic in and tape down any bits that aren’t staying where I want them.

I generally use tissue paper or tape in one of the afore-disclosed posts for the cockpits. The risk you run with tape is lifting of paint and other details like PE.

For wheelwells I fill them full with Silly Putty. Pops right out without any lifting of the paint in the wheelwells.

Hey Doobee, I would suggest that you add some facial tisue wet with water and stuff it in the wheel wells along with the form you have in there now. When the tissue dries it will stay put. You can stuff it in the cockpit too as long as you have not installed the control stick yet. Dont want to break it. I have also used Saran Wrap ( very pliable ) and stuffed it in the openings and then painted over the Saran Wrap with liquid masking film to seal any pinholes or open spots in the Saran Wrap. The stuff is thin so it will flow into the small crevices. When your done it pulls right out. What I really like to use though is Parafilm M. It stretches , you can roll it and you can pack it in real easy. It also pulls out real easy when done. With my builds if I am not doing an open cockpit and the cockpit is completed I install the canopy, put some Bare Metal foil over the glass area but not totally cover it and then paint some liquid masking film over the exposed glass area and onto the Bare Metal Foil . All thats exposed is the canopy framework. Leave this stuff on the canopy till your totally done with painting and clear coating. Canopy glass is clean as a whistle.

Thanks for all the tips. I will try tomorrow.

Have a GREAT night all.
