Completing my first model, Spitfire Mk I. When I painted the canopy some paint leaked trhough the masking tape. What is the best way of taking this off without scratching the clear plastic or taking off what I painted? The Spit came out great but don’t want to wreck the appearance of the model with a poor canopy? Thanks for any help I receive.
I like the way Goo-gone line of products. Seems to strip paint of canopies pretty well.
Did you use acrylic or enamel? If it is acrylic a touch of windex carefully applied should do the trick. If it is enamel good luck! Hope this helps.
Cheers!

For enamels, Lighter fluid will remove the paint without fogging the canopy. If it’s minor, a toothpick can also be used to scrape the paint off.

I have found that if you apply a small piece of masking tape to the paint it will lift it off, you may have to repeat the exercise a few times.
Hope this helps
Once you get the paint off, dip a cotton bud / cue-tip in some toothpaste and vigorously rub the affected area - the glass will eventually come up sparkling.
I remove it with a 000 brush and a very little drop of thinner… but there must be other way… well, this works for me…
I prefer the tooth pick method myself or a piece of clear sprue. Just cut the tip at an approx 45 deg angle and lightly push it towards the frame of the canopy. After the offending paint is removed give it a quick shot of future - no scratches.
Castrol superclean will aslo lift the paint without damaging the clear part. good luck. later.
Fantastic - 8 replies to one question and every one is different…I think it’s amazing how many different solutions there are to one problem…and the inventiveness and ingenuity of modellers in general.
Inspiring stuff.
Try a sharpened matchstick soaked in isopropyl alcohol ( the stuff in tape head cleamer bottles).
It even works on non gloss enamel paints.
I’ve had that happen to me a number of times. Here’s what I’ve done. First I mask the painted canopy frame then I use a cotton swab (Q-tip), with a small amount of “The Treatment” polishing wax. (The Treatment is a wax for polishing plastic models.) If you can’t find any, you can use regular non-abrasive Turtle wax. After clearing off the unwanted paint, just remove the masking tape.
for safely not to scratch the clear part,
Use a new toothpick, make the tip smooth and in appropriate shape with sand paper.
then wet the tip of toothpick with clean water. Remove the paint slowly.
