I was masking some parts for airbrush to my sdkfz. 251/22 and after the paint dried and i removed the tape there was some residue left. What should i use to remove it, i herd braker fluid or lighter fluid but i jsut wanted to make sure it was the right stuff.
did you mean brake fluid because that removes paint? don’t use that. lighter fluid will probably also remove paint. or is that what you want? maybe i should just shut up. [:)]
That is a bummer. You need to use something that won’t remove the paint. I had the same problem from masking an area for putty. but there was no paint to worry about. I used a qtip and alcohol. If you used acrylic paint though alcohol is no good.
What kind of paint? As for the masking tape, what kind did you use? Obviously here one wants to use the lowest tack tape one can get. I use a blue painters masking tape because it has a low tack to it, meaning it’s not very sticky. You may want to think about not leaving the tape on until all the paint is dry. If possible maybe pull it off as soon as feasible?
I used the blue tape also. The paint was polly scale but it was only to act as a primer so its not a big deal if the paint is removed. So alcohol would owrk then?
I am not familiar with Polly Scale paints. Are they acrylic? If so, then alcolhol will most likely remove the paint, which may in the long run be ok as you may end up removing the paint and trying again. Just a thought.
Awasoda, I think the best solution for this problem, is to remove the residue with alcolhol. If the paint is removed as well it would be in your interest to let that happen, as then you could repaint and be done with it…rather than trying to patch things up. I would suggest that you try the 3M brand of blue painters tape or the Tamiya tape. Both of these work well, and do not leave any residue. I also use Silly Putty with good results. Good luck on your modeling.[^]
I had a similar experience recently. Unfortunately, I did not find any effective solution, and ended up removing the paint along with the tape residue. Next time you apply the tape, blue painters masking tape being preferable, make sure the edges are clean and dust free before you tape anything to the model.
I don’t know if this will remove the paint or not, but you could try Goo Gone. It’s supposed to lift gummy residue from tape. Also, if the Poly S paint cures, you may be able to get the residue up without lifting much of the paint with alcohol or nail polish remover, if you rub lightly.
