I have some progress pics to show. I am building a Canadair CL215 air tanker and currently have everything primed, cockpit masked and primed and some sub-assemblies completed which are shown below. This kit will be built OOTB:
Fuselage Halves #1
Fuselage Halves #2
Fuselage Halves #3
Cockpit #1
Cockpit #2
Wings & Vertical Stabilizer
Wingtip Floats and Engine Nacelles
I am not building very quickly since life just dealt me some hardship that no parent should face - the loss of my only child to a hit and run driver. His passing was one month on the 28th of April. Nonetheless, I am trying to return to some sort of “new” normal life and have tried to make time to get back to modelling since it helps me with my loss by focussing my thoughts on building for at least a few minutes.
I am getting ready to next mate the fuselage halves, clean up the seams and maybe mount the wings. My next pictures, I hope will look something like a plane instead of pieces. I will also include a ruler to show you guys the size of this 1/72 scale subject.
First of all, please accept my families deepest condolences on your terrible loss.[BH] My thoughts are with you my friend, and it seems you’re doing the right thing by going on with that build. You’re off to an incredible start, and will look forward to seeing it come together, thanks. [:)]
My heart goes out to you my friend, please except my condolences on your loss. I too have had a life changing event, and finding modeling has been a God send for me. My prayers go out to you. Sometimes life does’nt seem fair.
And also, your off to a great start on your build. Be sure to show us more.
I am sorry to hear of your tragic loss. Please accept my condolences.
You’re making great progress on your CL-215. i can’t wait to see it come together.
RODC,
Please accept my most sincere condolences on your loss. I cannot imagine the kind of pain you must be experiencing. I recently finished a Heller CL-215 and I must say it was a bit of a job. There were some problems with fit where the wings joined to the fuselage and also with the lower forward hull. I also sanded off all the rivets . What kind of markings are you going to use? I can recommend the Leading Edge decal sheets. I finished mine in the Ontario provincial markings and it looks rather striking. Good luck and post more in-progress pics.
Im sorry for your loss, I have two kids and I hope I never have to face what you are. Looks like your off to a great start on the CL215 keep us posted.
I’m not joking if I say, that when I read your post, I tended to get tears in my eyes. First thought is how I’d feel if my little boy (just turned 2 two weeks ago) would be hit that way… [:(]
I hope and guess that modelling is a welcome passtime to get your mind of of it.
You’ve chosen a great subject though, and judging on quality, you managed to focus on modelling! Looks awesome. What model is it? It’s a model that - if it is on sale for a good price - I’d surely take home with me!
Your a/c looks excellent… Great job. I can sympathize with your terrible loss and I think it’s great that you have something to take your mind off of it for a few hours.
May the Grace of God be with you and your family in this time of tragedy. I offer my condolences.
The CL215 is looking great. I am looking forward to seeing the finished plane.
First off guys, I’d like to thank all of you for your kind words of condolence. We have been through a nightmare I’d wish on no one and being an only child, it makes it all the more worse. A child is a precious thing, so for you guys that are parents, make every moment count because you’ll never know what fate has in store for you just around the corner.
Moving along to some dicussion a little more cheerful, BillW4 asked about how I plan to finish the 215. It will be finished in the livery of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Forestry colors using decals from
Leading edge models. The livery is very distinctive and can be seen in the link to a thread below. As for the rivets, I try to keep them and so am very careful with my sanding. Although the rivets look a little out of scale for the subject, there is just something that looks real neat when the decals snuggle down around them with the help of Polly Scale decal solution. I agree with BillW4 that the fit is horrible with not only this kit but also with Heller’s CL415 as well. Squadron putty helps me here substantially.
Shark-41, I will be using the LEM decals and finishing her as tanker 282 and I will be leaving my rivets as discussed above.
svankreijl, this kit is a Heller 1/72 scale version of the 215. It is not too pricey (about $29CDN delivered to my door) but there are some fit problems and I find the plastic thickness to be a little on the thin side. They also make a 415 which is basically the same but with turbo-props and some variations with respect to engine nacelles, wing structure, and vertical stabilizer. I have built the 415 from Heller and done it OOTB finishing in the French forestry unit. Pictures of this completion can be seen in the thread link below.
As to the kit, looks good and you are doing the peas and carrots version. That is the one I want to build when I get the decals. Want to do a CL-415 in the Ontario scheme also.
I’d like to say three things.
first, I give you the most of my sorrows[BH]
second, very nice model despite the grief!
and third, I’m a bantam in hockey, but in the US, the midgets are around 8 to 10, peewees 11 to 12 and the bamtams 13 and up
Falcon039, Philp and Jinithith2…thanks for your kind words.
Philp I really like your reference to the Newfoundland livery colors as peas and carrotts…kinda neat.
Jinithith2…glad to hear your a hockey nut as well. I coach two divisions (recreational bantam and midget and competitive midget) as well as sit on the Board of our local hockey association as First VP. Your divisions seem a lot different from our own since we have the following based on age:
Juvenile…18 & 19 (similar in age to junior, but without a draft…recreational hockey)
Midget…15, 16 & 17
Bantam…13 & 14
PeeWee…11 & 12
Atom…9 & 10
Novice…6, 7 & 8
Squirt…4 & 5 (learn to skate)
I am still working away on my build, mated the fuselage halves this evening and will do the wing mountings tomorrow…then comes the putty fun…new pics by the weekend hopefully…
