I think some kits in 1:32 would be spectacular for GA crafts! I would think 1:72 far too small for most airframes, and the 1:48 only marginally better. Most of these planes are pretty small to begin with after all.
Here I am posing with my little “beauty” a few months before her untimely demise at the hands of another student. I loved her so much cause she matched my shirt!
I’m with you uilleann!! I would love to see some 1/32 civil aviation aircraft! Now we are talking about REAL airplanes - not the flying busses filled with passengers who faint if you pull a 20 degree bank. Actually, I like building airliner models - I just don’t like riding in airliners themselves.
As well as my beloved Cherokee, I too would like to build the C-152 that survived my first solo, and which carried me on my cross country trips with my sweaty hands clutching the yoke in a death grip. If only there were as much information published on the differences between a Beech 35 and a 36 as there is between a P-51B and a P-51D. Not that I don’t like warbirds, I just like GA aircraft too.
How about a list of GA aircraft we would like to see? I’d like to see a Kingair, a Cessna 310, a Piper Arrow (didn’t somebody do a kit of this?). I have the Hasegawa bizjets, but some updates there would be nice.
Ah, well, GA will soon be strangled by the bureaucrats, and we won’t have those small aircraft buzzing overhead all the time. Maybe then nostalgia will kick in and we will see some good GA kits. Can you imagine - Beech Bonanza in Detail & Scale?
GA will be forever. its just those idiots on the ground that complain about all the “noise” that close the airports up, man they really******me off. i’ve seen one to many airports close because they thought the 172 flying overhead was louder in decibles than th lawnmower next door. i get worked up just thinking about it.
i already posted my GA wish list, its on page 1 but here it is again
Super King Air B 200
Pilatus PC-12
Piper Malibu Mirage
Piper Saratoga
Cessna P210
Cessna 414
Yeah, since I’ve only flown a few of the smaller birds myself, I think a Cessna 152, 172, 172RG, 182, and Caravan would be fun to work on. Perhaps also a Piper Arrow II, Archer and a Beech or Mooney or two would be the cat’s meow. I think there’s a great market to be had in two, four and six place trainers and light aircraft. I don’t know too many of us who go our start in an F-16 when we went for our licenses out of pocket!
When we finished ground school, I ordered a nice mahogany model of a 172 which was painted very smartly from it’s maker. it sat on a black base with a swept and curved arm to support the plane as if in flight. Had a small plaque engraved for it with the date of our course, the school, and our instructors name. Then I had everyone from the class sign the base with one of those silver metallic pens and put a brief thanks as well. When we gave it to Matt (our instructor, and for me the best damn flight companion I’ve ever known) he almost got misty!
It’s amazing the friendships that form when you’re several thousand feet up and your instructor pulls your power. It’s not the lack of power for me that endeared me to them…but rather the cool calm and collected manner in which they taught me to know exactly what to do in those sort of situations. Every one of us in that class grew very close.
I can’t think of anything I’d rather do kit-wise than build a bird I’ve actually flown. And in ORANGE too!
Yeah, there are some other colors, but for me, that horrid orange/brown scheme was the first one I took heavenward! So apart from the balsa kits out there, was there ever a maker who produced reasonable kits in styrene? I mean, what about the big push for ga in the 40’s and 50’s? Models were around back then weren’t they? And for anyone who thinks the modern 172RS is a boring little plane, take one up at your local FBO! Those things have some ‘scoot’! And of course, there’s always the fun of doing 45+ degree banks anytime you want!
i’ve decided to go for a chipmunk/glider combo for this build, the chipmunk i will be modeling is the one that i posted pics of the wreck of on the scalehobby site. on the subject of DC3s there are a few in private ownership. would a model of one of these qualify? over to you for the answer to that Roadkill.
Greg
I still want to know where all these wonderful GA models are?!?! I haven’t EVER seen a styrene Cessna smaller than a Citation or a Piper other than a Cub on a shelf. I bet there’d be many more of us interested in this build, and indeeed in this arena of modeling if the kits even existed!
Actually there are several kits available. Testors has the Learjet, Minicraft has a series of GA kits in 1/48 and 1/72, Pipers, Cessnas and Beech. Monogram had a Tri-pacer and a Cessna 180 thats available on wheels and floats. I remember a Vega being made years ago but I don’t remember the manufacturer. Try some of the on-line hobby shops, your LHS or Hobby Lobby (which is were I’ve purchased most of my GA subjects). This is the reason I allowed a long start time was to let modellers find their subject.
