Can somebody recommend an alternative thinner to Tamiya’s alcohol thinner for acrylic paints? I’ll compare the prices and am sure similar stuff from other companies costs less.
Rubbing alcohol from the grocery/drug store/Wally World will work just fine. In addition, you can also use windshield washer fluid (methanol/ethanol and water), and it’s also cheap and available at Wally World for a couple dollars for a gallon!

Isopropyl alcohol works very well for Tamiya paints - it should also work well on all other water based acrylics - but always experiment first to prevent mishaps on your model.

have you looked at the Tamiya thinner in the 250ml container?
i got my LHS to stock it. it is $7 or $7.50 for 250ml,
instead of $3 for 50ml.
and YES, i know that is still more expensive than tap water, rubbing alcohol, windshield washer fluid,
gasoline, milk, beer, and a great number of other things.
but it is not prohibitively expensive, and there is no concern of failure.
and 250ml goes a long way.
think of it as a half price sale on Tamiya thinner.

Isoprophyl Alcohol (90%+) is the best and cheapest substitute for Tamiya Acrylic Thinner.
Have to agree with Wildwilliam, why use anything but the recommended thinner. 250ml will cover a lot of plastic ! IMHO
