Here’s the latest off the bench, Tamiya’s 1/72 190A-3 converted to an A-4. What a great little kit, this has to be my favorite model to build.
A few minor tweaks, added deployed landing flaps. These were cast myself using Goffy resin flaps as a master for my mold. Ailerons and rear elevators repositioned, brass tubes for the MG 151 barrels, Eduard pre-painted PE seat belts and of course the tail was modified to represent the correct antenna mast for the A-4. Paint is Aeromaster acrylic and the decals are Aeromaster “Early Butcher Birds, Pt. 1” with the exception of the Eagle’s head and flashes which are from the kit decals.
The plane represents “Yellow 4” of 9./JG 2, Vannes, France, Feb., 1943 piloted by Oberleutnant Siegfried “Wumm” Schnell, Staffelkapitän. Schnell spent most of his career with JG 2 and was one of the Luftwaffe’s leading Channel Front aces.
very nice job mike. You do get excellent results in such a small scale. I did the samething and had to double check if it was your typical 1/72 scale. It does look 1/48. Again your great molt work in this scale is only exceeded by your attention to detail.
Mike, that IS a beautiful plane and a great job on the model. The FW 190’s are great looking (for one of “theirs”) planes, and I think you have done it rightly! Thanks for sharing your fine work with us. Gary
Karl- Yes, I have. They’re not quite as nice as the Tamiya but I prefer them over the Hasegawa 190. The one big problem with the kit is the cowl ring diameter is too small. If you use the Hasegawa cowl ring it improves the look of the Revell significantly. I’m not big on the molded in canopy of the Revell either but that’s an easy fix. I’ll be a doing a Revell 190A-8 in the near future.
