Hit up a craft store for “bridal toole”. It’s a fine nylon mesh used for veils and such. Makes a great chain link fence in 1/35 scale. It’s very soft and flexible as well.
Good tip- “tule”
I think that window screen would not be a fine enough mesh. Plus the stuff is rather stiff to work with.

Yeah, it’s film stuff, but it is a good representation of the stuff…
I could have sworn the guy to the left was
wearing glasses.Looks like this might be more involved
than I thought. Thanks for the ideas so far!

If shopping online, the spelling “toile” or “toille” may help. too. Now, “chain link” and “chain mail” are completely different. CHain link fencing (sometimes known by its tradename “cyclone” fencing) is made of kinked wires woven together in a way which toille lace aproximates well. Chain mail is a fabric made by linking metal (iron or steel) rings together. Simple mail had rows and columns of rings connected together. The best mail linked 4 rings to the fifth–this gave the most amount of protection in coverage, and also the most redundancy in case either a rivet or a weld in the ring failed.
