CF-104 markings and colour scheme research

G’day all!

I’ve been building models since I was a little kid, but this is probably going to be the second model I’ve done over the age of 20. I’ve got an old monogram 1/72 f-104 kit.

Obviously this isn’t the finest in detail and the scope of this build isn’t exactly magazine worthy, but I’m TRYING to make a cf-104 in the 60s-70s vintage.

I have a few pictures of real life aircraft to reference, but a few questions I can hopefully be helped with.

I’ve already placed an order with canmilair for a decal kit!

I believe this era has the RCAF markings (instead of the “forces”)

white wings,

silver tailplane (instead of the red)

black upper nosecone, gray lower, OD cockpit and black upper rear cockpit.

There appears to be an off-colour (olive white?) on the fuselage panel behind the cockpit.

Anybody else got any tips?

I haven’t got the skill to scratchbuild the larger tail unfortunately… I’m struggling with just patching seams!

Re: color of panel behind cockpit: my references state the color of " natural fiberglass" which , looks to my eyes like a tan ? As the actual panel is unpainted, I do not know of any FS color .

BTW…Hasegawa produced a 1/72 Cold Lake CF104

I suggest you Google CF-104, there are thousands of images of these era F-104s available.

This one is taken in a museum…find that museum and you’ll find more images of the aircraft suited to your needs.

Hah! That museum is the Ottawa National Air Museum. I think I’ve been through there a hundred times at least :slight_smile:

I did search for images but had difficulty getting good reference pictures. Go figure.

Comparing a French cat to the CF-104 model was amusing.
