That paint is plain old Tamiya aluminum. From a rattle can. It looks very nice. I was going to use my airbrush but I’ve had great luck painting phasers with the tamiya I figured I’d give it a try.
I’m very happy with the results, no buffing required. I have used the model masters buffing metalizer in the past with good results.
Wow, you guys are moving at the speed of light with your builds and all looking great.
Finally was able to spray the Voodoo.
I shot Testors gloss black in the small bottle
Then shot Alclad polished aluminum then masked and picked off some panels with Alclad white aluminum. The flash reflected off the polished Alclad making things brighter than in reality.
It looks like actual metal
The tanks are very shiny
I still have to pick out some more panels and mask for the darker exhaust area at the lower rear of the fuselage. This is very time consuming but the results are super! The trick to Alclad is not to use any putty, polishing out the plastic helps and a glass smooth gloss primer application is a must.
Wow plasticj, that is spectacular. It really is not that difficult, eh? I gotta bite on this. I think the challenge for me though is getting the products. Not easy to find at my local HS.
Wiccan…we are going till May 15, so, lot’s of time!!
I airbrush with the large double garage door open all the way, and I sit a couple of feet close to the open space with a fan behind me to push air out. Plenty of ventilation. To clean the AB, I stand outside the garage and spray away from me. Just picked up a face mask to use with the Alclad just as added safety since I really like this stuff and want to do several NM planes.
PJ that looks great! I was going to do my F100 in camo because I absolutely STINK at silver. But now I will have to rethink this. So you paint gloss black as a primer and then add Alclad? I’ve never herd of it before. is that a specialty paint?
Thanks Steve. Yes it’s a specialty lacquer paint. The gloss black is used for the high shine Alclads like chrome and polished aluminum. You can use white or grey primers for the non high shine Alclads.
The Hun will look super in NM, specially the heat discoloration around the engine.
I will defiantly get some and give it a try. I have a B47 I’ve been neglecting because of its finish. I’ll have to finally build it next year for the Boeing build.
I did not use different tones of alclad, just gloss black base. Then did about 3-4 light coats to get a dark allu look. Masked off a few panels and did 3 more coats to lighten the rest.
A claercoat of alclad semi matt used to seal it all.
I usually spray lacure thinners to clean the brush, then a cup of turpentine to lubricate the neede before I put it away.
I am calling this 106 done! I was going to do a dragchute, but realized if I did that I would have nowhere to put this build since it would increase the length of the model by alot. When I get more room I will re-visit the idea. But here she is.
B1…holy wicked awesome job on that 106!! Well done…those markings are just stellar and i love the sheen. She looks like she just rolled out of Convair’s plant!! Love it. Now, which photo do you want on the Wall of Fame?? My vote’s for the last pic, but, that’s just me [H]
