Thank you for your kind words! I’ve only ever seen any Century Series aircraft as a static display in various museums around the US. I did get the pleasure of seeing an F-4 Phantom one July 4th about 20 years ago here in the Houston, TX area as it was flying from east to west across the wide-spread city of Houston. Basically came right over my house, did a U-Turn and headed back east, and repeated that maneuver several times that evening. Very very loud, even at its altitude.
Thank you for your kind words! You probably shouldn’t give me such ideas as building the companion planes to this unit, lol. Where are these aircraft displayed?
Those two are in Camp Mabry in Austin, headquaters of the Texas Nat. Guard. Used to fly down there a couple of times a year when I was in the guard in Dallas.
One time I was taking pictures at Little rock down near the Base Ops/ National Guard area as some 101s wer launching. Sitting on the transit ramp was a Marine F-4 with the crew sitting on its back. I coiuld see that they were sort of making fun of the old 101s as they went by, probably because they figured even though they were just passing through, they had the best performing aircraft on the base. As they watched, a C-130 went down the taxi way with only two engines running, they hardly paid any attention to it. At the end of the runway the Herk kicked in its other two engines and started its roll. As it passed the F-4 the Herk went into a steep climb and the two Marines just watched kept leaning back more and more as it climbed away. Who’s superior in takeoff?
The 154th TRS at Little Rock had a amazing collection of photo on their walls. One was a shot taken of a low approach at a Geodesic dome sitting on the side of a mountain somewhere in Arkansas as well as a beautiful shot of two recces going straight up, belly to belly, or doing it horizontal.
THey had a reputation of finding small towns and making high speed, low passes, and going supersonic. By the time anyone couild spot them they were just a dot in teh distance. They also had a tendency to fly low over the Arkansas River close to guys fishing in small boats. They claim to have actually swamped a few.
Thanks. My son just moved out of the Austin area, so I likely won’t find myself in that town any time soon (there is a presence in that town that rubs me the wrong way, being a Texas Aggie and all).
I used to live outside Randolph AFB. My nephew lives in Austin and I get your comment. Huston got “gentrified” so to speak. I’m being kind.
Aggie, awesome job on this one! I never realized how hunkered down the Voodoos were.
I really like the fin flashes, makes for an interesting splash of color.
Thanks! They do sit pretty low to the ground, but my pictures could be exxagerating that just a bit, as I had the Voodoo sitting on a cloth background that came with my photo studio box thing, whatever it’s actually called, and the fabric never lays perfectly flat.
So I pulled the old Monogram Delta Dart out of the stash! I think I’m going to give it a go. Raised panel lines and all!
I have that one in the “staging area” of my stash. I’m currently doing the Monogram Pro-Modeler F-102A Delta Dagger, and next up is Hasegawa’s F-104C Starfighter. I’ll follow the Starfighter with two F-105s - 1/48 Hobby Boss F-105D Thunderchief, and the ancient Monogram F-105D Thunderchief in 1/72 (I’ve found a KitsWorld decal sheet for that kit that I like). Then will finish my Century Series with the most recent boxing of the Monogram F-106A Delta Dart.
I’m working on both the 102 and the 106 and they are great looking detailed kits right out of the box. Unfortunalely I somehow lost the the 102’s air brake part but jeaton01 says he has a spare one and will mail it to me so I’m waiting on that now.
