Several months ago I pick up a bag of 1/48 AM B-25 parts to serve as spares. Both wings are missing. I have several AM and RM B-25’s in my stash. Is it feasable to make molds of the four wing halves and cast them in resin. I do have the Micro-Mark casting kit!

You probably could cast them in resin, but they would be solid & very heavy. If cast i resin, I would advise careful back grinding to hollow out & relieve some of the weight. Another thing you might try is to cast a resin “plug” and then vac-u-form new wings from styrene.

I think I’d cement the wing halves together and cast left/right wings as opposed to casting four halves. It will be a bit less expensive, needing two sets of RTV sleeves as opposed to four. The assembled wings will be more stable and easier to attach to the engine cowls. The four halves may warp more easily or may be if different lenghts.

In addition to heavy, casting bomber wings would be expensive. Neither the mold materials and the casting plastic are inexpensive. You could cut down the expense a bit by using plaster of paris for molds. Casting the wings as top and bottom pieces would reduce resin expense compared to casting complete wing halves. Still, I suspect you might end up paying more than buying another kit.
Thanks to all of you for your responses. My decision is to stay with my original idea of useing the incomplete kit for spare parts on my eight other 1/48 B-24’s. Might even do a cut-away of an AM kit. It seem that it is a little to much to cast to bomber wings.
