[/quote]I’ve got one of these kits in the stash and it looks like a lot of fun. I’ll enjoy watching this one come together.
Are we posting progress pics and all group build discussion in this one thread?
I think so, that’s what keeps it fun! Personally, I’m posting abbreviated updates here, with a more detailed build thread in the armor section.
That Nissan is looking sharp!
I generally just post abbreviated progress in the GBs but then again I don’t usually have a separate build post also. Maybe I need to start that.
Some progress photos or discussion is a must.
The 1971 Skyline Sedan is going to get a green interior. Here are the colors I am going to use.
The darkest color will be for the floor, dash, center console, and other trim. The two middle colors I’ll use on the door panels and probably the back of the seats. And then the lightest color will be for the seating surfaces.
Alright if I join with a Tamiya 1/35 Schwimmwagen Type 166?
I chose the paint. It is called Green Apple from Tropical Glitz.
This paint is a very sprakly metallic base coat and will really shine up nice once I apply the clearcoat.
I was trying to respond from my phone yesterday but it was all glitchy.
@ctruss53 that’s going to look really sharp with all those different greens.
@GreySnake01 the schwimmwagen most definitely fits in here.
Thanks for adding me! Now to figure out if I am going to use PE on the build and add alpine figures.
The door panels on my 1971 Nissan Skyline sedan are done.
I drew up a plaid pattern on the old Microsoft Paint program and then had a buddy print it out on decal paper. I used 3 of the greens from my last post. And then did some chrome trim with Bare Metal Foil.
And then I also got some 2k clear on the body shell.
Normally for these simple curbside builds I use Mr Super Clear, lacquer clear because that stuff works really well and I have a great way to polish it out. But I was clearcoating a more detailed build with some 2K clear that same night, so I used 2k clear on this car as well. So here is the result.
Looking nice. That plaid really makes it pop.
What an awesome finish on that metallic green! And clever use of custom decals. Fun to watch this build!
Sorry, I’ve been neglecting this thread – so here’s a short update on the BA-6. With some fitting and clamping, I managed to get the top shell cemented in place, and then masked it for airbrushing.
I then began to experiment on my paint mule with a brown basecoat, before deciding to stick with black. Then I messed around with various green shades, using the Vallejo Russian 4BO Green as the base, until I was happy with it. Very happy to have the paint mule at hand – it’s really helping me try things without fear of wrecking my main project.
There’s lots of ambiguity in the world of Soviet armor color tones, so I’ve decided that the main thing is that it has to look right to me. I really wanted to hit the green that looks “Russian” enough to be distinctive, even if it’s only “Russian green” in the eyes of modelers.
Anyhow, after the basecoat was on, I did some highlighting and mottling by switching to my 0.3mm airbrush adding small amounts of lighter green shades to my base color.
It’s now got a varnish coat that’s curing, and I’ll soon be on to chipping.
Meanwhile, I’m working on bending and building these photoetch tracks. I’m still not sure if I’ll mount them on the wheels or stowed on the fenders, but they are so tedious I have lots of time to decide.
EDIT: I just realized that if I put tracks on this thing… it might pull it out of the “cars and trucks” category!!
That’s nice, I’m going to have to try something like that.
Your getting into a gray area but I think we can allow the tracks since you still have two wheels. Keep up the good work.
Phew, thanks! All 10 wheels will still be visible, lol. The tracks just wrap around 'em, more like snow chains…
Speaking of the tracks, I got them all bent and soldered up. Wasn’t too bad – only took two full evenings of work.
Still have to figure out how to paint them and get them onto the wheels and onto the truck without breaking anything.
Then I did some mild chipping, going off reference photos as much as possible. I enjoy chipping – when you put the second color on it just adds instant 3D effect – it looks so much like paint on metal. Brings the thing to life. Lots of weathering yet to go of course, so the chipping will be toned down some.
Wow Tom… those tracks are cool and interesting lol. This is the first time for me seeing that type of metal track. Ive seen the standard tracks in metal linkage. I hope the paint and installation don’t give you any issues. Good luck
P.S. The paint and chipping look outstanding.
Wow. Those are very interesting. I can’t wat to see the weathering you do on them and to see them installed.
Thanks @ScaleModeler66 and @Schmidty13. They are unique for sure. They’re not really “tracks” in the bulldozer/tank sense, more of a traction-aid device that could be installed in the field, much like snow chains, I’d guess. Pretty cool how they fit over those dual-dual rear tires:
They were stowed on the fenders when not needed:
