hey i posted this in the diorama forum but maybe ill get some responses here: Hey I just have a quick question…I was wondering if anybody knew how to replicate the tiedown holes in a carrier deck…Im going to try to do a display base like that featured in the FSM a couple issues ago…if anybody has any ideas or dimensions that would be more than helpful. Thanks all
HEY! A fellow Buffalonian!

Both of these come in different scales. I wasn’t sure what era you needed so I search both. If you’re looking to make it from scratch, I remember seeing photoetched tiedowns at a model show last year, but for the life of me, I can’t remember the manufacturer.
I was wondering the same thing, but in 1/144 for the Revell E2-C Hawkeye I just bought.
Tamiya makes pe tie downs. I just purchased some from Squadron.
If you want to go cheap, here’s how I did it. I got a thick sheet of Evergreen styrene and used a drill bit to make the “cup” of the padeye and then used beading wire to make the “stars”. If I remember correctly from my days as a blue shirt, I’m pretty sure the actual padeye is 5" in dia. On the my 1st ship(CV-41) they were 4 point. On the Ranger they were 5 point. Here’s the one I’m working on (It’s not to scale). Hope that helps a bit to get you going.[:D]

the easiest i found is to buy them from squadron,if your doing 1/32 i worked it ti be 4.25" apart this was figured out by measuring a picture of a aircraft on the deck then measuring how big my model was compared to the picture all you really got to do is rescale the picture[:D]
hey thanks guys…eddie i really like your idea…im not to experienced in pe and im not to eager to try it yet…so ill try the styrene sheet method
I am also working on a similar setup BUT i need to know…how far are the padeyes apart from each other?
Eddie?
Thanks in advance
On a modern carrier, the padeyes are about 3 feet apart from each other. Approximately 6 inches in diameter and were 5 pointed. On the elevators they were 4 inches in diameter and only four pointed. There wre painted a light grey, Flat Gull Grey would be a good match.
Depending on how modern a carrier [;)] I started off on the Midway, which was heavily modernized thoughout her service. Padeyes were everywhere and white. The thinking behind white was you could see FOD hiding in them better. Also, depending on how long the deployment was, the deck would get quite dirty. The white stains you see in the second pic are from a salt water washdown.
This shows a more modern flt dk with 5 point stars and the dark gray paint on the Ranger.
Hope this helps and keep us up to date on your progress!

Awesome…thanks for the info…I am planning on using sandpaper as the base and drill holes 3 scale feet apart…give or take…
Mine is planned with a superhornet in the groove about to trap the 3 wire…
Thanks for the info…
Cheers,
Eric
