I’m looking at (in the future) building a captured He 177 in American markings. One in particular caught my attention. In a book I got from the library (Famous Bombers of World War 2, author unknown) that has a picture of a He 177 A7 in American markings. So I need two things-
The photo is in black and white, so colors are a mystery to me. As far as I know, they are the same colors as used on this aircraft-
If anyone knows the colors of this aircraft, that would be great.
Second, the He 177 A7 had extended wings, about 18 feet longer. On the off chance someone knows where the wings were extended- tips, inboard of the engines, or outboard, that would be awesome.
It’s the same aircraft. An He 177A-5 captured by the French Resistance and flown to the Royal Aircraft Establishment in autumn 1944. The photograph was taken soon after arrival in Sept 1944 when it still had French roundels and invasion stripes. On the side of the fuselage is “Prise de Guerre” and F8 above it.The roundels were replaced with RAF ones and it was given the serial number TS439 before being tested by Capt Eric Brown. Later it was shipped to the USA for further trials and was damaged beyond repair in a landing accident in Feb 1945. There are more photographs of it in the current (September - its published a month early) edition of Aeroplane magazine.
Well i dont know if this helps but it a pic i had of a He 177, From some of the other pictures ive seen of captuerd A/C about all we did was paint over the agsiting markings and put are own on most of the camo patern stayed.
I saw the profile of the A-7 in US markings (the bottom one), and I think that’s the one in my book. The picture was rather strange, as He 177s go. The landing gear was pitched forward and the aircraft was sitting very low. The prop tips nearly scraped the ground, or at least appeared to do so. I hope to replicate this on a future build. It should be interesting, I think. Anyway, thank you for the information. [;)][tup]
