Canvas Colors

Hi Everyone,

I normally build aircraft WWII Allied. I am currently working on some ground vehicles for a Diorama I am putting together. My dilemma is I cannot decide what colour to use for the canvas on the back of the vehicle. The vehicle in question is a Austin A10 Utility vehicle which was widely used during WWII by both RAF and USAAF for general airfield duties. The vehicle itself will be painted RAF Blue/Grey. I would be interested to know what colors you guys use for your Softskin vehicles. I guess this is complicated by the fact that canvas fades in the sun etc?

Thanks in advance

You probably wouldn’t be far off with OD. To represent a faded OD simply adjust the origional OD color by adding two or three drops of white at a time until you get the color you want.

Thank you seems like a plan!

I start with any kind of medium green, then add white and tan to fade the colour.

Harrowbeer, take a peek at this:

It’s Accurate Armour’s website page devoted to their resin models of trucks from WWII – including many British trucks. The build-ups, which are very good and presumably also quite accurate, might give you some inspiration.

Then again, the color used by the RAF might have been an entirely different proposition. You might want to hunt up a book on the ground vehicles of the RAF. I’ll bet there’s one out there somewhere. Maybe try asking on Missing Lynx’s forum, in the Allied WWII section. Those guys like to rise to the obscure questions.

Anyway, good luck.

Thank you Larry what a great site. I doubt the RAF used different colour canvas as production was kept simple during the war years.I now have a much better idea of what color to be aiming for.
