I know it’s been discussed before, but the search function turned up some rather vague responses. I need to tint a 1/48 canopy for an F-22 in that kind of goldish, brown tint that you see on new F-16’s and such.
I’ve heard of these tamyia clears. How exactly do you use them? Which ones and which ratios? Just airbrush them into the inside of the canopy?
Also, what is this future stuff? That sounds like something you would clean floors with. Where do I get this stuff and how do I use it? Is it better than the Tamyia clears?

I’ve tinted windows and canopies with Tamiya smoke and clear yellow - worked pretty well but I had to experiment on application techniques to get an even, clear non-frosted look. Try it out on clear plastic sheet first.
The Future that everyone talks about is indeed Future Floor Wax, available at just about any supermarket in America.
It’s vastly superior to just about any clear gloss I’ve ever used - lays down very well and dries very quickly. It also takes a bit of getting used to to apply correctly - just airbrush 3 or mist coats, allowing at least 10 or 15 minutes between each, then try nailing it with a wet coat. Again, practice is the key and you’ll figure it out.

I just tried tinting a canopy with Future and food coloring, but had a difficult time with it. I couldn’t get it very dark and even with additional applications, it just seemed to dissolve the previous coat. I plan on trying the Tamiya paints next. Try this link and experiment. I used Tamiya clears to tint canopies before, they worked fine. One thing you want to do, if you use a paintbrush, is to paint the inside of the canopy. That way you get a very smooth color distribution on the outside, without any VPL (Visible Paintbrush Lines ). I haven’t tried airbrushing them.
