Hey every one I need alittle help I am almost done with a Doolittle B-25 I am working on and need help masking the canopy. I have never done this before and was wondering what the best site is for the pre cut mask or is there a easy way to do it your self?
i just started acc.mins. b-25 it came with masks. i have never had good luck with pre-cuts. i always use regular masking tape. i’ll cut a 90 degree corner and place it into the window corner. i’ll burnish it down in the corner of the framework it cut away with sharp blade. one window at a time. as far as painting goes…several light coats!!! good luck
If i was you and this was my 1st time, id buy the masks. That way you will get a great result without too much hassle. As your skill progresses then maybe go for doing it yourself.
Squadron has some canopy masks. If they don’t have what you need you can mask each section paint it and let it dry before proceeding to the next one. If you have steady hands paint the ribs without any mask. Either way it is time consuming. I still have steady hands so I do mine with tape or a mask.
You could use decal paper to make the frames…or foil print or paint in the appropriate color.
I prefer to use Tamiya type tape for my masking. Just did a piece on masking windows on my blog…linky below. Canopies is up next. Just got to find a few minutes to do it.
Don’t forget to double dip your canopies in Future before starting any masking project!
I have been using Swanny’s easy canopy masking method with good results. For more complex curves and corners I also use liquid mask. But I actually “paint” the mask on to the part I want clear as opposed to laying on the liquid mask and then cutting around the edges.
Unfortunately Swanny’s website is down at the moment, but when it is back up check out th canopy mask and see if it might work for you.
